Mentally challenged man shot dead

SRINAGAR, Feb 19: A mentally-challenged man was shot dead by security forces outside the Air Force Station in Central Kashmir district of Budgam today.
The man has been identified as Syed Habibullah, a resident of Astanpora Soibugh in district Budgam. The locals said that the deceased had left his home yesterday. He is survived by five sons and a daughter. “All of them are unmarried. He was living in extreme penury,” they said.
Earlier today, police said that a mentally-challenged person was shot dead after he entered the security zone area at Air Force Station Budgam around midnight. “He crossed the security fence and came close to the Station perimeter wall. Despite repeated warning from the sentry the individual did not stop. The sentry fired some warning shots in air but the individual did not stop. The sentry fired towards him,” said police.
Police said that spot examination revealed that the individual of about 50-55 years of age who appears to be mentally challenged has died in the incident. “The person being identified is not wearing foot wears, is without proper winter clothing and has no identity card”, police added.
A shutdown is being observed in Soibugh village against the killing. Shops and other business establishments were closed after the news of death of Syed Habibullah spread in the area. Public transport also went off the roads.
