Max Hospital introduces radiation therapy technique to cure cancer

Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, Sept 1: In a significant development, Max Super Specialty Hospital (MSSH), Mohali has introduced Image Guided Radiation Technique (IGRT), the latest radiation therapy for treating cancer.
Giving details of this new technique, Dr Sachin Gupta, Senior Consultant- Medical & Hemato Oncology, MSSH, said that IGRT was a huge improvement to the existing infrastructure of the hospital. Until now the Radiation Oncologists have been treating patients with external beam radiation therapy in a mathematically precise way but were unable to see the tumour position during the course of the treatment.
Dr Pankaj Kumar, Senior Consultant, Radiation Oncology explained that the change in the position of tumour could be tracked with a CT image just before the treatment delivery and the appropriate corrections are made online. The IGRT would further help to better the delivery of radiation.
Talking about IGRT, Dr Kumar said that radiotherapy would act by hitting the tumour at its specific location by radiations. So for better outcomes, the radiation dose should be more and more confined to the tumour.  But there was constant change in the position of the tumour because of breathing movements, organ filling and change of position of patient. So there was a need to see the location of tumour during the treatment delivery sessions.
According to Dr Sunandan Sharma, Senior Consultant, Surgical Oncology, The Max Hospital has witnessed cancer cases coming from different parts of North India, which lack proper treatment and facilities.
Dr Ritesh Pruthy, Consultant, Surgical Oncology, said that with the launch of state-of-the-art Max Cancer Centre, we aimed to address this problem of accessibility and ensure immediate, effective treatment to every patient who walks into the hospital.
