*Troops should remain ‘ever ready’: GOC

UDHAMPUR/JAMMU, Dec 16: General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command, Lt Gen D Anbu today said that supreme sacrifices of soldiers of the Indian Army changed the course of history.
Addressing soldiers on the occasion of ‘Vijay Diwas’ at the Northern Command headquarters Udhampur today, the GOC-in-C said that the martyrdom and undeterred grit of the valiant soldiers of the Indian Army has changed the course of history. Their indomitable courage, unflagging zeal and dogged determination shall always be a greater source of inspiration for all ranks of the Indian Army.
Earlier, the Lt Gen Anbu along with other senior officers of the Command, paid homage to the gallant soldiers at ‘Dhruva Saheed Smarak’ to mark the 46th Vijay Diwas celebrations.
It was on this day in 1971 that Pakistani troops surrendered to the Indian Army in Dhaka, which was largest Military surrender after World War-II. The historic victory signifies a unique and unparallel feat wherein Indian forces fought selflessly for a noble and just cause to liberate the people of the erstwhile East Pakistan, leading to creation of independent Bangladesh.
General Officer Commanding, 16 (White Knight) Corps, Lt Gen Saranjit Singh has said that Indian troops must remain ‘ever ready’ to face any future challenge that the adversary may pose, with grit, determination and valour. He said Indian Army has always stood tall and met all the challenges faced by the Nation in an exemplary manner, coming out victorious each and every time.
In order to mark the 46th year of victory of Indian Army in 1971 Indo-Pak war over Pakistan Army, Vijay Diwas was commemorated at White Knight Corps headquarters. The GOC laid wreath at ‘Ashwamedh Shaurya’ Sthal War Memorial at Nagrota to honour the valiant martyrs of Indian Army. The other ranks also paid their homage on the occasion.
In 1971 on this day, 93,000 troops of Pakistan Army surrendered before Indian Army. The blood of martyrs ensured victory and led to the birth of a new nation.
The officers and other ranks of 14 and 15 Corps in Ladakh and Kashmir also celebrated Vijay Diwas and paid respect to the martyrs in separate functions organized today.
Vijay Diwas was celebrated at headquarters Western Command with full military grandeur and dignity. To commemorate this historic, occasion, a solemn wreath laying ceremony was held at the “Veer Smriti” at the Command Headquarters.
Lt Gen Surinder Singh GOC-in-C Western Command and all ranks of the Command and a large number of veterans and serving soldiers laid wreath in the honour of our valiant martyrs and paid homage to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for our mother land.
At Kathua, Ex-servicemen and war widows paid rich tributes to the martyrs of 1971 war with Pakistan, in a simple function organized at Shahidi Chowk Smarak. Capt Gian Singh Pathania, president of the Association was leading. He addressed the gathering and recalled the supreme sacrifices of war heroes and heroic act of Indian Army which led to the surrender of over 93,000 Pakistani soldiers.
Minister for PHE, I&FC Sham Choudhary accompanied by the members of Poorva Sainik Sewa Parishad, J&K also paid floral tributes to the martyrs of 1971, to mark the Vijay Diwas. Many former Defence personnel witnessed the function. On this occasion, the minister also honoured the family members of the martyrs. Brig (Retd) Suchet Singh (president), Brig (Retd) B S Sambyal and Col (Retd) Januja were also present on the occasion.
Welfare Society Guru Nanak Nagar Jammu led by Balwinder Singh (president) an chairman AS Khera, organized a function to celebrate Vijay Diwas and paid rich tributes to the martyred Indian soldiers. Rich Harvest School, Bari Brahmana also celebrated Vijay Diwas by holding special assembly where, rich tributes were paid to the martyrs of 1971 war.
