Mann Ki Baat

In his recent Mann Ki Baat monthly radio programme, Prime Minister has touched on some of the most crucial social issues facing the country. He meticulously avoided political themes knowing that the millions of Indians want him to reflect on social problems. The first problem which he touched upon was the misbalancing gender ratio in the country. The number of girl children in about one hundred districts of the country is much less in relation to male child. This is a disturbing factor. He has made a special reference of Haryana and has once again asked the countrymen to demonstrate great interest in the slogan Beti Bachao Beti Padao. Unfortunately, some sections of Indian people still carry the old notion with them that a girl child is a burden. They fail to understand the drastic change that has happened in the country and the old superstitions are no more valid. Other subjects which he touched upon were water and housing. Water is a rare commodity and we have to develop the culture of not wasting water. We have many areas in the country where there is scarcity of water although in other parts there is abundance of water. But what is needed is judicious use of water so that it is uniformly made available to all. Housing is a pressing issue and millions of people in the country are living in jhuggi jhonpris meaning just shanties. He hopes that by 2022, his Government will be able to provide shelter to everybody in the country. The PM had made a promise in his last year’s Independence Day celebrations that within one year toilets would be provided to all Government schools in the country. He was happy to say that 3.5 million toilets had been provided and the work was going on.
It is nice to hear the Prime Minister making assessment of the achievements of his Government. He has to talk to the nation and the administration has to provide him the feedback which he will sell to the nation. This means that the ministries, departments and entire administrative structure of the country are involved in accomplishing the task set forth. Talking to the people on the radio also means making the administration responsible to the people. Hopefully these monthly programmes will go a long way in helping people evaluate the progress of development in the country under the present Government.
