JAMMU, Apr 23: Mankind Pharma Limited organised a CME on “New Cholesterol Management Guidelines” here today, where in about 50 prominent city physicians participated.
The detailed guidelines were provided by Dr Dinesh Sudan, Cardiologist and Director of Sudan Heart Care Centre.
He said that lowering blood cholesterol is considered a major tool to fight heart disease. National Cholesterol Education Programme under the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of US guides the treatment of blood cholesterol. The expert panel formed to up-date the guidelines for Cholesterol management published its recommendations recently which challenge the prevailing practice of blood cholesterol treatment.
As explained by Dr Dinesh Sudan, treatment of blood cholesterol has to be based on evidence. The expert panel had collected data from 1995 till 2013 to give guidelines with the aim to define “Whom to treat” “With what to treat” and “Intensity of treatment to be given”. After a detail and lucid multimedia presentation by Dr Dinesh Sudan, a robust discussion was held and question – answer session was conducted.
The new guidelines challenge the current practice of cholesterol treatment, he added. For example, repeated blood tests to determine whether cholesterol has reached a certain target level are now discouraged. Similarly, only very high levels of Triglycerides were to be considered for treatment. By extending treatment to additional patients as per new guidelines, it is expected to lower occurrence of heart disease by an additional 30 per cent, he informed.
The attending Doctors were pleased to be able to incorporate the latest and most scientific approach to treating a major risk factor for heart disease by attending the CME.
