Man killed as snow, rains lash Kashmir

Srinagar, Apr 29: A man was killed in lightening as incessant rains lash Kashmir plains while snowfall in upper reaches led to plunging of temperature by several notches in the region today.
Since wee hours, heavy rains lashed Kashmir including Srinagar and it continued throughout the day intermittently. In upper reaches of the Valley, there was fresh snowfall including at Pahalgam, Amarnath Cave, Zojila and Gulmarg. An official of Meteorological Department said 6.8 centimeters of snow was recorded in Pahalgam till 5 pm.
Amid heavy rains, the lightening killed a man identified as Lateef Ahmad Poswal at Tangmarg village of Aharbal area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district. He was taken to Kulgam hospital where doctors declared him dead. The lightening in Kulgam also damaged electronic equipments and appliances, locals added.
Due to incessant rains and snow in upper reaches, the temperatures across Kashmir plunged by several notches. According to MeT department, the day temperature in Srinagar was recorded 10.5 degree Celsius, 13 notches below normal, while night temperature settled at 9.3 degree Celsius. Qazigund recorded 10.4 degree Celsius maximum temperature and minimum temperature was recorded 7.4 degree Celsius.
While maximum temperature in Pahalgam recorded at 7.3 degree Celsius, the night temperature settled at 5.2 degree Celsius. The day temperature in Kupwara was recorded 13.0 degree Celsius while night temperature settled at 8.9 degree Celsius. The maximum temperature in Kokernag was recorded 13.4 degree Celsius and the night temperature settled at 7.5 degree Celsius.
Gulmarg recorded day temperature of 14.0 degree Celsius while minimum temperature settled at 1.0 degree Celsius. In Leh, the day temperature was recorded 16.6 degree Celsius and night temperature was recorded 2.1 degree Celsius. The neighbouring Kargil recorded 17.1 degree Celsius day temperature while the night temperature settled at 4.3 degree Celsius.
The MeT Department said that wet weather will continue till May 5 in Kashmir. “There is possibility of light to moderate rains or snow at most of the places over the State in next 24 hours. There would be occasional sunshine during the next few days,” the MeT officials said.
