Major crackdown against beggars

Srinagar, May 24: A day after begging was banned, Police in a major crackdown arrested scores of beggers from streets especially from City Centre Lal Chowk area.
The beggars who were found soliciting alms in the markets especially in the Lal Chowk area were arrested by Kothi Bagh Police in a morning raid.
The raids followed after the District Magistrate (DM) Srinagar directed police to arrest those persons who will be found soliciting alms in public place, in and around religious places and other private premises.
As the Police across Srinagar started the drive against the beggars today arresting scores of them while others gave them a slip.
Police is now investigating the gang behind the beggars who bring them to Srinagar. They have come to the conclusion that there are non-local and local gangs who make these beggars to beg on commission basis. Besides commission, they are being provided boarding and lodging.
