Maintain sobriety associated with Gandhi’s anniversary: Sachar

NEW DELHI, Sept 30:  Former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Rajindar Sachar today asked the government not to “tinker” with the grandeur and sobriety associated with Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday with “so-called fad” of cleanliness day.
In a statement here, Sachar demanded that the government keep the celebrations for Gandhi’s birth anniversary sober as practised every year, saying any tinkering with its grandeur and sobriety is “sacrilege”.
Sachar, who is also the former president of People Union for Civil Liberties, said October 2 reminds one of the sacrifices and the morality in politics in relation to the fight for independence and this should not diluted due to government’s emphasis on cleanliness.
“The programmes associated with the birthday must not be diluted by this so called fad of cleanliness day. Cleanliness has to be actually maintained and not by unnecessarily calling to duty all the government servants and make them go through the hypocrisy of arranged photo opportunity item,” he said.
The Prime Minister’s ‘Clean India’ campaign is a mass movement aimed at cleaning the country.
Modi will launch the programme on Gandhi’s birth anniversary from India Gate. (PTI)
