The immortal singer

L. C. Kaul

Nearly one hundred and four years ago, on April 4, 1904, mother nature bestowed on India, a priceless gift, a baby with a golden voice, who was to fill the world with an undying and ever growing joy for all times.
Born in Jammu, the baby was to grow into the immortal Kundan Lal Saigal who would soon enter into every heart and home with his divine gift, ever more sweet and soothing voice.
Kundan Lal’s parents Amar Chand Saigal and Kesar Kaur, originally hailing from Jullunder, were of modest means, living in a small house at a point in the town where four bazars of Jammu mingled.
Amar Chand was a judicial clerk in the local administration who in time rose to the position of a Tehsildar in Ranbir Singh Pora, at the court of Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir. Because his father had a job in R S Pura and his uncle Girdhari Lal Saigal was a teacher in Jammu, K. L. Saigal had his early education at Ranbir High School, Jammu and subsequently at the then Prince of Wales College (now known as GGM Science College) Jammu. Saigal’s mother Kesar Kaur was a deeply religious woman. She used to take young Kundan to various religious functions where Bhajans, Kirtans, Shabads were sung in traditional styles based on classical music. Kundan often accompanied his father to the interior parts of the State where he would drink deep into the folk music of Punjab and Kashmir, from shepherds and wandering minstrels. Saigal was inspired by his mother who herself sang Bhajans and in childhood by a sufi peer named Salman Yusuf, who nurtured Saigal’s voice with vigorous riaz..

An actress of great calibre

Sudhir Mishra's last film Khoya Khoya Chand, in which he tried to re-create the Golden era of Bollywood, received good reviews for its style and realistic feel. Close on the heels of his next film "Tera Kya Hoga Johnny", Sudhir Mishra in a candid chat with Sami JanSo, what do you have to say about the way Khoya Khoya Chand was received?
Well, I'm glad that people loved the film for which I had put in so much of research. It's about being creative, it's about the various problems, it's about sexual politics, it's about being young and ambitious and it's about making mistakes. We finally managed to re-create the Golden era of Bollywood in such a convincing style. I believe the credit for the films success goes to all the people associated with it.
A lot of critics were of the opinion that the film could have done better with a different star cast.
I won't agree with that fact. I think Shiney and Soha perfectly fitted the bill and their performance has surely been one of the high points of the film.
Why is it that you make films after such long gaps? I mean your last film Hazaron Khawaishen and Khoya Khoya had a long gap in between?
Well, I believe as a filmmaker I have to feel for the subject before I start working on it. It took me time to decide on my subject after Hazaron Khawaishen and once Khoya Khoya came my way it all just got started.
The movie was earlier titled Bahut Nikle Mere Armaan. What made you change the title to Khoya Khoya Chand?

Improving Public Transport

A fortnight ago we had presented before our readers the problem of public transport in the city. The citizens have shared their opinion about the status of public transport. As the city has expanded beyond imagination the problems of people have increased due to poor status of public transport. In this regard. It will be of interest to share with you the opinion and aspiration of the citizens about the public transport in the city.
Rajan Sharma of Greater Kailash is not satisfied with the availability of public transport for places like Greater Kailash. According to him, Greater Kailash inhabits about twenty five thousand people but for such a large area there is no dedicated public transport available. Matadors do not ply nor do any buses. The transport authorities should soon do something in this matter, he avers.
Sunita Mahajan a house wife is highly critical of the autorikshaws in the city. She raises a pertinent question that why the autorickshaws do not charge as per meter. ‘‘Why are the meters dead ? The administration,’’ she opines, ‘‘is silent on the issue’’. She expresses her dissatisfaction with the autorikshaws. ‘‘They not only charge a hefty rate but bully passengers. They should be more polite to passengers,’’ she hopes.
Rajeshwar Gupta also express same sentiments. According to him Autorikshaws take the passenger for a ride. They charge more and agree to move only as per their sweet will. He wants to have dedicated autostand space alloted in every locality. He also hopes that late night Autorickshaws are a must. He hopes that the authorities will ‘

Be your own financial Planner

Neha Aggarwal

Imagine a situation after 15-20 years, when you need some money for your medical expenses, your child's education, or for some retirement requirements, and you won't be able to fulfill that just because you did not considered your Financial Planning important around 15-20 years back……. That means, you are still not too late. You have enough time even now to plan for and meet your future requirements.
Financial Planning implies Identifying your future needs for money, Converting these needs into approximate numbers and then planning for your savings and investments to meet those future needs. Proper Financial Planning will also help you to beat the effects of Inflation apart from achieving your pre specified financial goals.
All these parameters (except Options available) have to be thought about in detail because these will be the first things that even Professional Financial Planners will be interested in. That means, if these things are clear, half the job of a financial planner is done.
The most important part in anybody's financial Planning consists of Insurance. Since each one of us, during our lives are faced with numerous risks - failing health, financial losses, accidents and even fatalities, our instinct drives us to cover ourselves against those risks. Though an insurance cover can't protect you against the emotional losses arising out of these risks, it softens the economic crisis that usually accompanies these losses. Insurance is a kind of FORCED SAVING that also helps in investment and retirement planning along with .

Philosophy of Success

Acharya Mahaprajna

The practice of Prekshadhyana is a means to understand that truth, which is beyond articulation, reasoning and thinking. After its long practice in different camps, participants are trained as teachers to propagate the practice of Prekshadhyana to the general masses.
The question arises, "Why is sadhana required in life?" It is so because everybody wants to become successful in life. Nobody wants to lead an unsuccessful or meaningless life. The biggest philosophy of sucess is to practise the state of awarness. Those who are aware are successful, whereas those who remain infatuated, are always unsuccessful in life.
A man thought of leaving his town to get rid of his poverty, which was responsible for failures in his life. After deep meditation, he realised that by going to a new place, his poverty or inclination would not change. So he dropped his plan of leaving the town.
Successful people sare always guided by their awareness and they never get infatuated with life. An infatuated person is not able to assess a situation correctly, so he fails to take appropriate timely decision, thereby failing miserably at every step in his life. In the wake of deep infatuation, his descretionary consciousness and intellect become so clouded that he cannot take proper decisions in life. His third eye remains shut because of the dense layers of illusions and ignorance. The philosophy for a successful life is practice of awareness.
