Dementia
The crippling disease
Maneka Gandhi
My friends
mother died last week. She had suffered
from dementia for 5 years and in these
years , family life had come to a halt.
She was violent and scared. On good days
she was a child and talked to her long
dead father. On bad days , she accused
her daughter in law who looked after her
devotedly of all sorts of crimes, threw
things, beat off people, packed her
clothes three times a day and boarded
imaginary planes. She was in and out of
hospital as she broke limbs, got bedsores
and high blood pressure. Everyone was
relieved for her when she died because it
had been 5 years of enormous suffering,
My aunt has just entered the first phase
of dementia. She is 84. She remembers
only her teenage years and her
schoolteachers . All of us have
disappeared from her memory and so has
her daughter with whom she lives. She
alternates between beatific vagueness and
hostile suspicion.
The older you get, the higher your risk
of developing dementia. Dementia is
widely recognised as a major medical,
social and economic problem in developed
countries where the over 65s account for
an increasingly high percentage of the
population. Unfortunately dementia is now
becoming a major problem in developing
countries where it did not exist 50 years
ago. More than 50 million people have
dementia and the most common cause of
this dementia is Alzheimer's disease.
By 2025 this figure is expected to double
with 71 per cent of these likely to live
in developing countries, making the need
for prevention of an uncurable disease
crucial. Most populations are getting
older . In U.K 20% of the population is
65 and older. By 2025 25% of people in
Canada will be 65 years or older. 8% of
all Western populations are currently are
affected by moderate to severe
dementia a collection of symptoms
that significantly impair thinking,
normal activities and relationships
and 10-15% have mild, early and
borderline demented states.
There are several forms of dementia. They
include:
Alzheimer's disease is the most common
cause of dementia in people 65 and older.
Nearly all brain functions, including
memory, movement, language, judgment,
behaviour, and abstract thinking, are
affected. To give you an idea of figures,
one in 20 Americans have Alzheimer's. The
number rises to one in four over age 85.
Binswanger's disease is dementia
characterized by damage to small blood
vessels in the brain as a result of
hardening of the arteries to the brain.
Dementia is characterized by confusion
and intellectual impairment. The symptoms
include loss of memory, judgment and
reasoning, changes in behaviour and
communication abilities. mood swings,
depression, irritability, and trouble
learning new things, making a decision or
remembering facts. One in five people
with dementia will become aggressive and
can pose a danger to himself or herself
or the people he or she lives with..
There is no cure only a progression of
symptoms.
Understandably, the scientists are
worried and studies are being done all
over the world to find a reason and
thereby a way to prevent the onset of
symptoms. Diet is one factor researchers
are investigating for its role in
reducing the risk of dementia . One of
the most important studies , running into
millions of dollars, has been done by the
Department of Preventive Medicine , Looma
Linda University, CA called the Adventist
Health Study. They looked into the
incidence of dementia and intake of
animal products and these were their
findings :
*Beans, legumes and peanuts are rich in
vitamins and minerals, folate, omega-3
fatty acids and antioxidants.
Tomatoes contain an antioxidant called
lycopene, which reduces the oxidation of
'bad' cholesterol, and could in turn
reduce the risk of clogged arteries and
heart disease and strokes. .
How do you want to grow old ? At home
with your grandchildren or in a home with
other patients of dementia ? You make the
choice with every meal you eat.

Chandrayan-I
Indias Mission to Moon
G V Joshi
The Indian Space
Research Organisation (ISRO) will launch
its ambitious and maiden mission to the
moon, Chandrayaan-I, from the Satish
Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota some
time in mid-September 2008, on board
Indias proved Polar Satellite
Launch Vehicle, which was used to launch
10 satellites in one go in April 2008.
The 525-kg satellite will be placed in
the 100-km polar orbit around the moon
and it will have a lifetime of two years.
ISRO scientists have completed the
integration of 11 instruments - six
indigenous and five from other countries
like the US, the UK, Germany and Bulgaria
under international cooperation - onto
the spacecraft. The testing is in
progress at the ISRO Satellite Centre in
Bangalore. All these instruments have
made Chandrayan I, a true International
collaboration effort.
The idea of launching Chandrayaan was
initially mooted in a meeting of the
Indian Academy of Sciences in 1999. This
was followed up by discussions in the
Astronautical Society of India in 2000.
Based on their recommendations a National
Lunar Mission Task Force was constituted
by the ISRO .The task force recommended
that it will be worthwhile to launch
Chandrayaan. After in depth
discussions, it was unanimously
recommended that India should undertake
the Mission to Moon.
Chandrayan-1 will observe the Moon from
various angles, and beam back pictures on
its chemical, physical and chemical
characteristics, besides its crater
history. The spacecraft will also survey
the minerals on the Moon. The data may
also throw light on the origin and
evolution of the Moon and other bodies of
the planetary systems, and the evolution
of life on the earth.
Chandrayan -I will take about five days
to reach the Moon, which is 3.84-lakh km
away, and will have a life of two years.
The Chandrayan - I is a cube
approximately 1.50 m side, Weighing 1304
kg at launch and 590 kg at lunar orbit.
It accommodates eleven science payloads.
The power generation would be through
single-sided solar array to provide
required power during all phases of the
mission.
The Moon will be mapped with a high
accuracy of five-metre resolution, with a
stereoscopic camera.
According to mathematicians working at
ISRO, there are three ways of sending a
spacecraft to the moon. The Russians and
the Americans have used the simplest
method of sending the spacecraft into a
low parking earth orbit and then boosting
it to the lunar orbit.
According to Shri. Adimurthy, from Vikram
Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC),
Instead of putting the spacecraft
in the circular parking orbit, it is
better to put it into an elliptic orbit
first and then send it to the Moon at an
appropriate time.
The PSLV will inject the craft in the
elliptical geosynchronous transfer orbit
(GTO), (285 km x 36,000 km). From here,
it would be sent towards the moon by
firing rockets. This is the fastest and
cheapest way of going to the moon, well
within the PSLVs capability.
Once in the lunar orbit, the craft will
come under the influence of the
Moons gravity. Small rockets would
be used to achieve lunar polar orbit.
This solar array consisting of a single
panel generates 700W of peak power.
During the periods when sunlight does not
fall on the solar panel, it will be
powered by Lithium ion (Li-Ion)
batteries. The spacecraft employs a
parabolic antenna for payload data
transmission to Earth.
The spacecraft uses a special propulsion
system to reach lunar orbit as well as
orbit and attitude maintenance while
going round the Moon. The propulsion
system carries required propellants for a
mission life of 2 years, with adequate
margin. The spacecraft has three Solid
State Recorders (SSRs) on board to record
data from various instruments on board.
Chandrayan-II - to be undertaken soon
afterwards would have a proper Moon
Lander, which would land on the lunar
surface and try to explore the surface in
far more details.
ISRO is also planning to send a man into
space to orbit around the earth ahead of
moon mission.
In the words of Shri. Adimurthy,
More than receiving information
about the Moon, the mission will provide
ISRO a platform to undertake future
inter-planetary expeditions. (PTI)

JUNK
FOOD

Ms Priya Seht
Health is wealth. Nowadays,
the people are tarnishing their own
health by eating what we now call as junk
food. People are stealing wealth from
their own hands by eating such foodstuff.
Why is the fast food known as junk food?
It is because junk = trash = rubbish. We
are mingling this trash in our wealth to
ruin our health. It is said that healthy
mind resides in a healthy body but when
the unhealthy body is there, then what?
No healthy mind then?
Every person has a fervor of having
pizzas, burgers, etc but what about the
homemade food? Is it a toxic which when
consumed will become lethal? We are least
concerned about our health. By eating
junk, people get deprived of the
nutrients they get from home cooked food.
The cold drink, which is being drunk,
contains pesticides and as experts say,
Cold drinks mean toilet
cleaner and these very cold drinks
dissolve calcium and enamel also.
Eating junk food causes many problems
like obesity as the food contains
innumerable amount of fats along with
extra carbohydrates and salts. This even
results in problems like High Blood
Pressure, Cholesterol, anemia and many
such detrimental problems. Eating fast
food increases the possibility of cardiac
problems in children also. The food that
the people eat may contain contaminated
stuff and many things that they might not
be sentient of.
People relish such trash food and forget
that they are jeopardizing their health.
They trust the chefs preparing such
foodstuff without even realizing about
the consequences.
At each and every corner of the city,
youll find youth sitting in hubs
and ruining their health by eating all
sorts of junk food. They are not even
aware as to what type of ingredient has
been put in their food.
The T.V. shows also show the ways in
which things are cooked in cities and
once you see them, youll leave fast
food forever.
The old people are so vigorous and
muscular that one sometimes doubt whether
they are old or not. But when you see the
condition of youth, youll be
bemused to see their condition because
they are so lazy and lethargic.
The food may be prepared unhygienically.
In the present scenario, we are having
this junk food probably because of lack
of time but we must understand that by
eating such things we are inviting
trouble. We must realize that we have the
wealth of health in our own hands and can
either make it or break it.

Cosmic Uplink
through Sadguru
Pt. R.C.Awasthi,
Shastri
.
Our Shastras say
Yasya na swanya pragya ,shastra
tarya kroti kim Lochnabhyam vheenasya
darpanam kim krishyati?( What good
can Shastras do to a man who does not use
his inherent genius. What can the mirror
do to a person who has no eyes to see ?).
Similarly, in our indigenous parlance it
is said Paani peeje pun ke, guru
keeje chun ke (Drink the water
only, after purifying it by passing it
through a sieve, adopt guru similarly
after a thorough scrutiny). Our culture
is built upon values of Dharam, (Pious
way of life) Arath, (Financial well
being) Kaam (fulfillment of desires) and
Moksha (Supreme freedom). The supreme
freedom (Moksha) is the very essence and
the purpose of spiritual pursuit. Sadly,
in modern times, it is a culture in which
most of our authorities have not only
failed to live up to their stature but
have in many cases acted hypocritically.
Given the complexity of religious and
cultural circumstances in India, it is
understandable that the idea of spiritual
master be misunderstood.. Yet, we are
faced the blatant abuses of power and
trust in spiritual traditions. This has
prevented many people from recognizing
the possibilities inherent to the
relationship between an authentic
spiritual teacher and his or her student.
The requirement is a principle and
practice of a conscious discipleship that
is fully empowered, intelligent, and
discriminating. Conscious
discipleship, places the power and
responsibility back into the hands and
heart of the disciple by the Sadguru
immediately after he or she initiated. It
is a Conscious discipleship that involves
a thorough and systematic process of
self-focused enquiry and verification.
Moreover, conscious discipleship is
required in order to maintain a
relationship of mutual growth even if a
complete surrender of the self or ego by
the disciple before Sadguru invariably
and ultimately follows the process for
radical transformation of the disciple.
This eye center, as it is
usually described is sometimes identified
with the pineal gland, it is the point at
which yogis meditate to concentrate the
soul-consciousness that stands diffused
elsewhere throughout the body. It is from
there that the soul can flee the body
into higher subtle realms. Even if it
does, the soul will not yet be fully
free. Once it has left the body, through
death or through techniques of soul
projection during its earthly life, the
soul can lodge itself in other forms of
selfhood. Nevertheless, these ethereal
bodies are also under the realm of
Kaal and Maya.
They are bound to rotate in different
Yonis albeit at varied
degrees.
There are the snares in the path of true
spirituality, and the soul must extricate
itself from them. One of these forms is
called the astral and another is called
causal, and the soul may be burdened with
each in turn before it can disencumber
itself of the need to be attached to any
form at all and reunite with its parent
soul The Param Purush.
Once it has rejected the physical,
spiritual and mental artifices of mind
the soul is ready to slough off this
world and begin its ascent. But how
should it proceed? The first words in the
answer to that question are not
alone, for one must have a guide,
a master to beckon and befriend the soul
both in the physical plane and in the
higher, interior planes. A desire, if it
is so to be said for the salvation of
jeevatma, requires trust in the Sadguru.
Now we can see why: the passage out of
the material realm requires a master
skill in navigation, for the deceptions
of mind make an independent
voyage virtually impossible for jeevatma.
As Madhu Paramhansji puts it, the Sadguru
(master)steers the soul safely from
plane to plane by concealing him in him
to keep him away from the allurements of
mind. Thus Sadguru and Jeevatma become
Joyful riders together en route this
Sojourn to the Ultimate throughout the
cosmic seas. Sadguru is the pivot and a
guarantee of Jivatmas Mukti (liberation
of soul-in-bondage). Linking with Sadguru
is uplinking with super-cosmic beyond all
spheres of Sagun and Nirgun.
