Locals protest for completion of canal work, payment of wages

UDHAMPUR, June 2: Demanding complete construction work of 1460 meters canal at village Damak in tehsil Ramnagar and release of payment to the labourers engaged in the construction work, locals held a strong protest demonstration, here today
The protesting villagers raised slogans against Irrigation Sub Division Ramnagar and District Administration Udhampur for the delaying the completion of this canal work.
According to ex Sarpanch Sandhoor Singh, this canal in village Damak was sanctioned and the work got started in 2011 by Irrigation Sub Division Ramnagar at the cost of Rs 42.04 lakh. However, only 800 meters of canal length was constructed by executing sub standard work as 70-80 percent un-broken stones were used with clay rather than approved concrete material and ratio. He demanded that the matter should be investigated and action be taken against the Technical Staff.
Only 20 meters of canal has been constructed so far while the incomplete work is causing soil erosion of Agriculture lands, the villages alleged and added that they brought the matter into the notice of Irrigation Department Ramnagar but no remedial steps have been taken.
On being contacted, Verinder Gupta, AEE Irrigation Department, explained that because of funding problem, the work was left incomplete by the contractor, whose contract has been terminated. The contract is being re-tendered and work will start within days, he added.
