Literary awards

Sahitya Akademi is the most prestigious organization in the country that honours outstanding men of letters with its annual award for their contribution. This year’s award goes to two lucky persons from the State, KPS Officer Shailendra Singh from Jammu region and Shah Ramzan from Kashmir. Congratulation to both of you, you have done honour to the State.
Shailendra Singh’s Dogri novel “Hashiye Par” deals with the life of the poor and drown trodden in the country. It depicts in what a state of abject poverty and deprivation a large percentage of our population on below poverty line is forced to live and despite big developmental schemes still a lot remains to be done to raise these people to the level of human dignity. The subject matter deals with social justice and empowerment. The book has already been translated into English. Shah Ramzan has been awarded for his collection of Kashmiri poems that have won acclaim.
It is a matter of satisfaction that outstanding literary talent among the artists of the State is duly recognized and encouraged. It will certainly inspire younger generations. While they are enriching literature they are also enriching other social genres like history, social relations, and social dynamics. Both Dogri and Kashmiri are recognized languages and we are hopeful that with constant encouragement from institutions like Sahitya Akademi, there will be a time when literary output of high value and excellence will appear to bring us pride and honour.
