Life remains affected due to chill, coupled with power woes in Kashmir

SRINAGAR :  Life remained affected due to severe chilly weather conditions coupled with frequent and unscheduled power failure in the Kashmir valley, where night temperature has witnessed further improvement though maximum was dropped resulting in cold.
There was no respite from chilly weather conditions in Ladakh region where people continued to freeze as minimum temperature was below freezing point.    A Met department spokesman said here there is possibility of rain or snow at isolated places in the region as fresh Western Disturbance (WD) was approaching.    However, earlier two WD last week left without touching the region resulting in dry and cold weather.    Icy cold winds coupled with cloudy sky and frequent and unscheduled power cuts has affected normal life in the Kashmir valley, where people protested against Power Development Departments (PDD).
Met spokesman said due to cloud sky, the minimum temperature has witnessed improvement while maximum temperature has dropped considerably.    Experts have advised people, particularly children and elders to avoid moving out in the morning and evening hours when temperature goes down.
In the summer capital, Srinagar, against yesterdays minus 3.8 degree night temperature, it was minus 2 which is being considered normal. However, cloudy sky and icy cold winds has forced people to remain indoor. People are using all gadgets, including local “Kangri” to keep themselves warm.    Met spokesman said the sky will become largely cloudy in the afternoon which could result in further chilly conditions in the city. However, the weather will remain mainly dry during subsequent four days. The lowest so far was recorded minus 5.6 degree on December 27 when Dal Lake and other water bodies were frozen.
Because of cold, the prices of warm and woolen cloths besides coal has gone up considerably in Srinagar.    There was also considerable improvement in the minimum temperature at famed tourist resort of Pahalgam against yesterdays minus 6 degree, it was minus 3.5 degree 1.5 degree above normal.
Gulmarg, a world famous ski resort also recorded minus 3.2 degree night temperature which was a notch more than yesterday and three degree above normal.    Qazigung and Kokernag also witnessed improvement in the minimum temperature though it was still below freezing point. Against yesterdays minus 4.8 degree yesterday, it was minus 3 degree at Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir while at Kokernag it was minus 3.1 degree against minus 3.5 degree recorded yesterday.
However, people in Kupwara continued to freeze as the minimum temperature remained below minus 5 degree, three notches below normal.
Cold wave conditions continued in Ladakh region where all water bodies remained frozen.
Met spokesman said at Leh the night temperature was minus 14.4 degree against yesterdays minus 14.3 degree while at Kargil it was minus 13 degree against yesterdays minus 13.6  degree.
