SRINAGAR, May 3: Police today arrested a Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant and recovered arms and ammunition from him in North Kashmir’s district of Baramulla.
Police and 46 Rashtriya Rifles of Army based on an Intelligence inputs about presence of militants, raided Qazi Hamam area in district Baramulla of North Kashmir and arrested LeT militant, identified as Parvez Ahmad Lone.
One pistol, four pistol rounds and two hunter knives were recovered from him. He is being questioned about the other members of the group who are operating in the area. Police have registered a case (FIR 74/2015 U/S 7/25) in Police Station Baramulla.
In the meantime, a Defence spokesman said here that based on a specific input, a search operation of Army was launched yesterday in forested area of Gaggadhari Bahik in Tanghdar sector which resulted in recovery of a huge cache of arms, ammunition and war like stores.
The spokesman said: “Acting on a specific input of a hideout with large quantity of war like stores in the Gaggadhari Bahik of Tanghdar Sector an Infantry unit based at Tanghdar area immediately launched a search operation at 7.30 am on May 2. Concerted search of the area was carried out by the search parties of the Infantry unit. At around 10.25 am a hideout was unveiled resulting in recovery of 6 pistols, 12 pistol magazines, 3 Chinese grenades and one compass. The search continued and at 1.15 pm another hideout was busted resulted in recovery of 1 AK 47 rifle, 2 AK 47 rifle magazines, 1590 rounds of AK-47, 32 fired cases, 1 Pikka rifle, 2 RPGs, 1 Disposable Rocket Launcher and 1 UBGL grenade.”
Chinar Corps Commander, Lt General Subrata Saha, complimented the alertness of troops who braving the inclement weather conditions, unearthed the weapons and grenades there by denying their use by inimical elements.
It may be mentioned here that Army is conducting massive operations over the past two weeks in the forests near the Line of Control (LoC) in North Kashmir after inputs that few militant groups have managed to infiltrate into the area.
There are inputs with the Army that at least three militant groups have infiltrated from Kamalkote sector of the Uri in North Kashmir last month taking advantage of freak weather conditions and one from Gurez sector.
However, Army found no traces of these militants but they are continuing searches as they have inputs that there is lot of activity of infiltrators taking place near the LoC on Pakistan side.
A senior Army officer said that around 150 militants are on launch pads along the LoC in Kashmir and they are trying to take advantage of snow and damage caused to the fence due to recent rains. “However, Army is ready for foiling any attempt as we are alert”, he said.
