SRINAGAR : Traffic was on Friday resumed on 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway and historic 86-km-long Mughal road after remaining suspended for eight days due to accumulation of snow and slippery road conditions.
Meanwhile, only one-way traffic will continue on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country on Friday and vehicles will ply from Jammu to Srinagar.
Traffic on the national highway, the only road linking the Ladakh region with Kashmir, was resumed after remaining suspended for eight days following heavy snowfall early last week.
However, only stranded vehicles at Kargil, Drass and Meenmarg were allowed to move towards Kashmir valley, a traffic police official said.
Hundreds of Kashmir bound vehicles, particularly empty trucks, oil tankers and those carrying passengers were allowed to move towards Sonamarg after the different agencies, including Border Roads Organisation (BRO) cleared snow on the Zojila pass, Meenmarg and Zero point.
Our priority is to clear all vehicles stranded on other side of the Zojila towards Kashmir as there is a fresh heavy snowfall warning from November 12, he said.
Decision to allow traffic from Sonamarg in the central Kashmir district of Ganderbal to different parts of Ladakh region will be taken only after all stranded vehicles are cleared, he said.
Traffic official said the Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir to Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, was also open today after eight days closure.
Vehicles stranded on both sides of the Pir-ki-Gali will be cleared first before allowing fresh traffic, he added. Meanwhile, hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying essentials for Kashmir valley left Jammu this morning as only one-way traffic will continue to ply on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway till further orders.
No vehicle will be allowed from here to Jammu, he said. (AGENCIES)
