Leh Administration makes Saturday vehicle free day

LEH, Apr 7: Setting an example District Administration took a historic decision to make vehicle free day on every Saturday in all Government Departments of Leh.
The decision was taken soon after reintroducing the public transport system in Leh. Deputy Commissioner, Avny Lavasa issued special instruction to all the District officers to travel by public service transport or to come on the cycle to reach their offices on Saturday. To ensure each officer follows the instruction she also advised them to take selfie while travelling in public service and upload on officers WhatsApp group.
The move was welcomed by all officers who wholeheartedly supported the administration’s decision. Many of them including Deputy Commissioner herself, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Moses Kunzang and Tehsildar Gurmet were seen walking on Saturday to reach their respective offices. On the way to her office Deputy Commissioner interacted with number of people including shopkeepers, street vendors and tourists.
This move had helped the administration to get feedback from public through various department heads. On each route one officer was made the Nodal Incharge to look into the grievances of public as well as to take feedback from them. Prior to revival of public transport service the public was totally depended on contract carriage transport Van Taxis plying illegally as Stage carriage. With the revival of public transport the traffic congestion was deduced tremendously and general public welcome the move of administration.
Expressing her delight over success and full cooperation from public as well as all stakeholders, DC Avny Lavasa said that public transport service in itself is a progressive sign of city and it was much needed service reintroduced and administration is making all its efforts to improve the services by adding more buses besides making bus sheds at various identified places.
Responding to a query regarding District Officers using public transport to walk to reach their offices on Saturday, she said that unless one becomes the stakeholder in it, one really can’t understand the problems of people so District Officer gives feedback to administration and accordingly administration makes efforts to improve the services in future. She added that such efforts not only helpful to reduce traffic congestion but also helps in saving fuel and more importantly saving the environment.
Additional Deputy Commissioner, Moses Kunzang said that  administration got very positive feedback from public and administration will take all steps to improve the services in future. He also said that administration is also in process of introducing tourist circuit buses to some of the popular tourist destination places like Shanti Stupa, Shey, Thiksay, Hemis etc.
