SRINAGAR, Feb 3: People whose lands have been acquired for the Semi Ring Road from Pampore to Ganderbal via Budgam district held a protest at Press Enclave here today demanding appropriate compensation for their land.
They said as per the provisions of new Land Acquisition Rehabilitation & Resettlement Act (LARR) enacted by Congress led UPA Government in 2013, land and property owners get 4 times more compensation than the market value of land/ property in rural areas and 2 times in urban areas, but the said law is not applicable in J&K.

They alleged that NHAI has already deposited hundreds of crores into the accounts of respective Deputy Commissioners but they are yet to be called for any deliberations or discussions.
“Being main stakeholders, we are not taken into confidence. No meetings are being held with us,” they said
The protesters demanded that Government must pass an ordinance for new Land Acquisition Act and hold private negotiations with the farmers or affected people.
“Our demand is that Government should pay compensation as per Central Acquisition Act to us and provide jobs to the people who were associated with these lands. Besides, proper compensation should be given to the orchardists that will come in the way of construction of the highway as per present value of fruit,” the protesters said
“We took up this matter with Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, Revenue and Works Minister and several other ministers but no concrete steps have been taken,” they added
The protesters threatened that if their demands are not met they would be forced to sit on roads.
