NEW DELHI, Dec 28: A delegation of West Pakistan Refugee Action Committee (WPRAC) led by its President, Labha Ram Gandhi today called on Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh and thanked the Modi Government for the initiative taken by it to address their genuine demands which had been pending for almost 70 years.
Speaking to media persons later, Labha Ram Gandhi spoke highly of Dr Jitendra Singh who, he said, took great personal pains to follow up their issues and coordinated their regular sittings with the officials in Union Home Ministry and also arranged their meetings with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
Assuring Labha Ram Gandhi and his colleagues of the Government’s continued support to them, Dr Jitendra Singh said, they are the victims of an anomaly which should have been corrected several decades ago, but somehow it did not figure in the priority list of the successive governments. The present government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said, has been in power only for over two years but has taken upon itself the responsibility to redeem the injustice meted out to them.
Lashing out at those who were opposing the government’s welfare measures for West Pakistan Refugees, Dr Jitendra Singh said, this was a group of disgruntled activists who were uncomfortable to digest how the Modi government had managed to do in two years which they could not do for 70 years, despite being in power both at the Centre and the State, because it did not suit their policy of appeasement towards a certain section of population. He said, if those who are opposing  the Government decision have even an iota of courage, they will first speak against the illegal foreign nationals who have, in the recent years, settled down in J&K in increasing numbers.
Dr Jitendra Singh said, not only the polity but the entire society and the nation owes it to this hapless section of refugees to ensure a dignified means of livelihood for them. It is therefore, he said, expected of all of us to rise above political lines, regardless of our affiliations or beliefs, and support the cause of the brethren who have been denied their legitimate rights despite being Indian nationals.
Labha Ram Gandhi pointed out to some of the pending demands of West Pakistan Refugees and said that he and his colleagues will be holding a series of interactions with Dr Jitendra Singh and other high functionaries in Government of India to resolve the same.
