Kohli reviews functioning of SMG, seeks proposal for introduction of car policy

SRINAGAR, May 21: Stating that Government contemplates to take measures of urgent nature for strengthening of State Motor Garages for suitable and comfortable transport to all departments, Minister for Transport Abdul Ghani Kohli today directed the authorities to prepare a detailed proposal for introduction of car policy in the state and asked them to submit the same within a week so that matter will be further discussed for its early implementation.
The Minister gave this direction during his visit to State Motor Garages Department to take first hand information about the infrastructure facilities available besides reviewing the functioning of the department.
Elaborating the features of car policy, the Minister said that need of the hour is to initiate innovative measures for revival and revamping of the Department and said that bringing all the vehicles of Govt. departments under a common ambit   will help in pooling all available resources under an umbrella in a coordinated manner so that the vehicles be provided to the Departments as per need basis.
Stressing on the need to equip the existing workshop with latest equipments, the Minister asked the concerned officers to prepare proposal about the requirement for the same so that necessary steps for its upgradation are taken earnestly, adding that workshop should develop on modern lines as this is the need of present time.
Expressing concern over the shortage of staff at district as well as directorate level, Kohli asked the officers for convening the DPC meeting with in shortest possible time. He further asked them for filling up of all vacant posts through a set procedure.
The Minister also sought comprehensive details regarding procedure followed for purchasing of vehicles and asked them to keep the climatic conditions and topography of state in mind   before purchasing any new vehicle. He further sought details of running cars, fully damaged cars and condemned vehicles which are lying in stock yard. He further sought the details about the requirement of additional vehicles to meet out the increasing need of the departments.
Commissioner Secretary Transport, Director SMG, Deputy Director SMG, Works Manager besides other officers of the concerned department were present on the occasion.
