Kishtwar still reeling under darkness

JAMMU, Feb 16: Notwithstanding the difficulties being faced by lakhs of people, uncertainty is still prevailing over early restoration of power supply to the mountainous Kishtwar district by rectifying the faults on 132 KV single circuit Udhampur-Kishtwar transmission line.
The 132-KV single circuit Udhampur-Kishtwar transmission line had suffered extensive damage at various places on the intervening night of February 6 and 7 due to massive snowfall as a result of which both the mountainous districts, which are provided electricity through this line only, plunged into complete darkness.
After hectic efforts, the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), which is responsible for the maintenance of this transmission line, restored the power supply to Doda district last evening.
However, the restoration work on transmission line between Thathri and Kishtwar affected yesterday also due to fresh spell of rainfall.
The NHPC has conveyed the System and Operations Wing of the State Power Development Department that repair of the damages to seven towers of the transmission line between Doda and Kishtwar will take four-five more days, sources said.
However, as an alternate arrangement it has decided to divert the power from Doda to Kishtwar through 33 KV lines and if there is no problem from the weather side this arrangement will be made by tomorrow evening.
“It would be only after restoring power supply to Kishtwar through 33 KV line that local faults, if any, in the Kishtwar district will come to the notice of the Power Development Departm-ent”, sources said.
