Killing of BSF man desperation by militants: Police

Fayaz Bukhari
SRINAGAR, Sept 28: Police today said that killing of a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan and targeting his family is desperation on part of militants after success achieved by security forces against  them.
Inspector General of Police, Nitish Kumar told Excelsior that after huge successes achieved by security forces militants are desperate to act. “So, there is so much desperation among terrorists to do something and you might be knowing that security forces in recent days achieved major successes at different places in north Kashmir, be it at Kupwara, Uri or at Sopore area. So we have achieved success in all areas and lots of terrorists have been killed and apprehended. As a result there is desperation and I will say that they choose a soft target. Martyring a jawan who has come home on leave is a shameful, dastardly and cowardly act and not only this but also injuring family members. They didn’t spare even his 50-year old aunt”, he said.
Kumar said that Laskhar-e-Toiba militants are involved in the killing of the BSF jawan. “Name of Lashkar-e-Toiba has come to fore after talking to injured and probe that we conducted. Around 3-4 militants carried out this attack and one Mehmood  Bhai, a Pakistani resident, was accompanying them”, he said.
While giving details of the incident, IG said: “The incident is of last night. At around 9 pm, some terrorists barged into the house of one BSF jawan, Constable Muhammad Ramzan and first they attacked him with a knife and then martyred him by opening indiscriminate fire on him. The militants also injured BSF jawan’s father, two brothers and aunt in firing. The father of the slain jawan is on ventilator and is undergoing treatment and he is in very critical condition. This is a very shameful incident and it is being investigated thoroughly and our efforts are to neutralize the terrorists involved in this act as soon as possible.”
Kumar described the incident especially involving family members a very disturbing trend. “A very wrong trend is starting as you know recently an army officer, Lt Umer , who was martyred in south Kashmir region. It is a very disturbing trend and family members are getting involved in it. It is high time to condemn such incidents. In north Kashmir, the society by and large is not encouraging militancy and unlike other areas of Valley, there is no such desire among small kids to join militancy. This is why the numbers of local militants in north Kashmir is less”, he said.
The IG said that operations against the militants will continue. “It will definitely leave impact. And not only Qayoom Najjar but in recent days, lot of top terrorists in Valley who were active since long time were gunned down. One Pervez of Handwara was killed and many others like him. So, as a result we are seeing peace today in North Kashmir and in entire Valley. And our efforts would be to continue operations against the terrorism”, he said.
Kumar said that they had information about movement of Qayoom Najjar and they shared it with army who eliminated him. “I don’t know about it but yes we had technical intelligence input about his movement. Yes, we had intelligence about his route and that was shared with army and based on that intelligence the operation was carried out”, he said.
General Officer Commanding (GOC) Victor Force of army, Major General BS Raju in the meantime termed the killing of BSF personal as a cowardly act. He said: “It’s an unfortunate to see a one Kashmiri killing the other and army condemns the act. Army and police will together investigate the matter and bring the culprits to justice.”
Asked about the status of militancy in South Kashmir the GOC said: “Our main motive in South Kashmir is to bring peace to the area and to act strictly against the militants without harming innocent locals.”
