Srinagar, Apr  23: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has shot a show cause notice to Khyber Agro Farms for the closure of its Milk processing unit for producing unsafe Milk. The notice was issued after another sample of the company was found substandard and contaminated with detergent.
The SMC Health Officer, Dr Shafaqat Khan, told Excelsior that a sample of Khyber Milk taken under the directions of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court few months ago has been found unsafe for consumption as it contained detergent.
The sample that was sent to Public Analyst Kashmir and Food Testing Laboratory Kolkata has found that milk supplied across Kashmir was unsafe as it contained detergent. It was also found of sub-standard quality as it lacked requisite quantity of fat and salt. However, the milk had been consumed by the people across Kashmir valley.
Earlier last year, Khyber Milk sample tested by Kolkata Food Testing Laboratory was found sub-standard and contaminated with detergent. The High Court took cognizance of the sub-standard Milk and imposed a fine of Rs 10 crore on Khyber and other companies.
The Food Safety Department in Budgam instead of producing charge sheet against its owner, produced charge sheet before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Budgam, against one of its representatives Mohammad Shafi Gania son of Late Ghulam Mohammad Gania resident of Raipora Lar Ganderbal.
The SMC today sent a show cause notice to Khyber Agro Farms asking them why legal action can’t be initiated against them for the substandard and detergent contaminated Milk. The company has been asked why their unit can’t be closed for processing and distribution of unsafe Milk.
The SMC has also asked the company not to distribute the batch of Milk that was found substandard but it has already been consumed by the people several months ago.
