Kashmir unrest, LWE lead to increase in IEDs

NEW DELHI: Due to unrest in Jammu and Kashmir and the Left Wing Extremism (LWE) in some southern states, there has been an increase in the number of Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosions.

As per the figures, in the year 2016, there was a 26% increase in IED blast incidents in comparison to 2015 and the causalities increased by three percent. During year 2016, total 337 numbers of blasts took place in the nation causing 591 causalities including 112 persons killed and injuring 479.

While in the year 2015, a total of 268 blasts took place in which 574 number of causalities occurred killing 117 persons and injuring 457. The number is second highest after the year 2013 in which 596 incidents of bombing took place killing 130 people and injuring 466. The total number of blasts were 212.  (AGENCIES)
