Kashmir highway through, historic Mughal road remains closed for 4th day

SRINAGAR: Despite fresh snowfall today, the national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country was through while the historic Mughal road remained closed for the fourth day today due to accumulation of snow and slippery road conditions.

Meanwhile, dozens of roads, connecting far-flung and remote areas, including those near the Line of Control (LoC) also remained cut off with their respective district and tehsil headquarters in north Kashmir because of heavy snowfall yesterday.

The Srinagar-Jammu national highway was through for both way traffic today, a traffic police official told UNI.     He said there was light snowfall in Jawahar tunnel area this morning and the sky remained cloudy. However, vehicles, including those carrying passengers, from both sides were allowed to move this morning.

Meanwhile, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway was still working at several  places to widen the road and remove the landslides.     The 86-km-long historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region remained closed for the fourth day today due to  heavy snowfall at several  places, including Pir-Ki-Gali. About one to two feet of snow had already accumulated at several places on the highway and fresh snowfall was reported today.

They said snow clearance operation will be started immediately after the snowfall stops. However, traffic will be allowed when a green signal is received from local authorities, they said.     A large number of vehicles, mostly trucks, are stranded on both sides of the road. (AGENCIES)
