JAMMU, Mar 14: Justice Badar Durrez Ahmed, senior Judge of the Delhi High Court, will be new Chief Justice of J&K High Court.
Sources said that Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India J S Khehar has already recommended his name to the Union Ministry of Law and Justice and formal orders are likely to be issued shortly.
Born on March 16, 1956 in Shillong (Meghalaya), Justice Ahmed studied in St Edmund’s College, Shillong and St Columba’s High School, New Delhi. He graduated from St Stephen’s College, Delhi University in 1975 and passed Tripos in Economics Examination from Trinity College, Cambridge University, UK in 1977 and obtained BA (Hons) and MA Degrees. He received LLB Degree in 1980 from Delhi University.
He was enrolled as an Advocate on September 5, 1980 with the Bar Council of Delhi and started practice in the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court. In 1986 he set up a law firm under the name of “Lawyers Associated” and remained its partner till March 2000. Thereafter, he practiced in the Supreme Court and other High Courts as counsel and also advised on various aspects of law relating to finance, companies, properties, banking, contracts and other areas of commercial and civil law.
He has keen interest in Personal Laws including Muslim Personal Law and has written several articles in this connection. He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court on December 20, 2002.
He was appointed as Acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court first with effect from June 10, 2013 to September 2, 2013 and thereafter with effect from February 17, 2014 to April 20, 2014.
Meanwhile, consequent upon the retirement of Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar, Union Ministry of Law and Justice has appointed Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar, senior most Judge of J&K High Court as Acting Chief Justice of J&K.
Justice Sudhakar hails from Panapakkam village of Vellore District of Tamil Nadu. His father late Justice S T Ramalingam served as a Judge of the Madras High Court and his maternal grandfather, late S P Sri Ram served as a District Judge and retired as Chairman of the Sales Tax Appellate Tribunal.
Justice R Sudhakar had his early schooling in Don Bosco Matriculation School, Egmore, Chennai and completed from St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Madurai. He graduated from Loyola College, Chennai. He was conferred a Degree in Law from Madras Law College.
Justice Sudhakar was enrolled as an Advocate on December 14, 1983 and practised in all branches of law and specialized in the field of Customs, Central Excise and Sales Tax Law. Besides, Madras High Court, he also practised/appeared in cases before the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka High Court and Kerala High Court. He regularly appeared in matters before the Supreme Court as well.
Justice R Sudhakar was elevated to the Bench as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Madras on December 10, 2005 and as a Permanent Judge on April 20, 2007. In his career as a Judge of the Madras High Court spreading over a decade he decided 26196 Main Cases and 32943 Misc. Cases.
On his transfer from the Madras High Court, Justice R Sudhakar took the oath of the office of a Judge of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir on April 18, 2016.
