JU organizes musical prog ‘Fall Retreat’ with Kalapini Komkali

JAMMU, Oct 11: The Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu in collaboration with SPIC MACAY, J&K organized a musical programme “Fall Retreat with Kalapini Komkali” today at Brig Rajinder Singh Auditorium, University of Jammu, here.
Prof Jigar Mohd, Dean Research Studies, University of Jammu was the chief guest on the occasion.
In his welcome address, Prof Shailender Singh Jamwal, Dean Students Welfare appraised the audience about the activities planned by the Department of Students Welfare in making University Campus a culturally happening place.
He acknowledged the importance of cultural and literary activities in shaping the overall personality of students. This is to mention here that SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth) is a non-political, nationwide, voluntary movement founded in 1977.
The lead artist of the evening, Kalapini Komkali is widely recognized as one of the finest and well-trained classical vocalists of the younger generation who is endowed with wholly original, melodious and extremely rich voice. She is the daughter and disciple of legendary Pandit Kumar Gandharva and has also been trained by her illustrious mother, Vidushi Vasundhara Komkali.
Kalapini’s wide repertoire of ragas and compositions is further supplemented by the presentation of the traditional songs of Malwa representing the folkore and ethnic scent of the region. She mesmerized the audience with the power of her voice. She was accompanied by Shambhunath Bhattacharya on Tabla and Chetan Nigam on Harmonium.
Prominent amongst those who attended the programme included Prof S.K Pandita, Chairman Campus Cultural Committee, Dr Sapna K. Sangra, State Chairperson SPIC MACAY, J&K, Prof Geeta Sumbli, Prof. Namrata Sharma, Prof Arvind Jasrotia, Dr BK Bajaj, Dr Anil Gupta, Dr Sarita Sood, Dr Savita Nayyar, Dr Vinay Thusoo, VK Sambyal and Sanjeet Khajuria.
The event was coordinated by Dr Seema Rohmetra, Sumeet Sharma and Ifra Kak. The sound was operated by Arif Paul. The hall management was looked after by RS Bandral, Sunny Singh, Seema, Jyoti, Anup, Saloni, Yashpal, R.P. Singh and Arun.
