JU organizes extension lecture on ‘Present Scenario of Urdu’

JAMMU, Aug 26: The Department of Urdu, University of Jammu, today organized an extension lecture on the topic “Present Scenario of Urdu in the world particularly in Turki”.
Prof Khwaja Ekram Ud Din of JNU, delivered a thought provoking lecture on the topic.  He informed that according to census of 2011, Urdu is the fourth language which is spoken all over the world. “In Mauritius Urdu is the mother tongue of those  people while in Canada,  two lakh people speak Urdu, said Prof Khwaja Ekram.
Regarding Turki,   he informed that journalism in that country was started by Urdu newspaper in 1880,  namely “Pak-E-Islam”. It was published in two languages i.e in Turki and Urdu. In Istanbul University Turki, Urdu Department was established in 1915.
Presently  Prof Khalil Touq is the HoD Urdu in Istanbul University. He has authored  40 books. He was recently awarded “Nishan-E-Pakistan” award by the Pakistan Government for his contribution to Urdu language and literature.
“There are seven Urdu Professors in the Department of Urdu,  Astambol University. In Turki three more Universities have  established Urdu Department. They have established five scholarships for Indian students who go to these universities for higher studies in Urdu,”  informed Prof. Khwaja Ekram.
In his presidential address,  Prof. Kedar Nath described Urdu a link language and cultural heritage of India. He said that Urdu is a civilized language having a rich literature to its credit. He also threw light on the present position of  Urdu in Central Asian countries and described Urdu a link language of the whole world.
Earlier, in his welcome address,  Prof Shohab Inayat Malik,  HOD Urdu introduced Prof. Khwaja Ekram ud Din to the audience. He also informed that five Urdu students of Istanbul University,  Turki,  are visiting Jammu University on September  19, 2016.
