JMC signs MoU to tackle dog menace

JAMMU, Mar 4: Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Nasik (Maharashtra) based NGO, Nanded Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to carry out the ABC/ARV programme for stray dogs in all the 71 wards of  JMC for a period of two years.
The move has come in the backdrop of growing complaints from the general public regarding the nuisance created by stray dogs and increase in the number of dog bite cases in Jammu City. Under the MoU the implementing agency shall be responsible for conducting survey/census of stray dogs, catching, transport, sterilization, pre and post operative feeding and care, re-transport of sterilized dogs from ABC campus back to their original street/ location, anti rabies vaccination and de-worming, etc.
The whole programme shall be implemented in a humane  and scientific manner as per the Animal Birth Control (dogs) Rule 2001 and guidelines issued in SOP by Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI).
While giving details about the programme Dr Manmohan Singh,  Commissioner, JMC said that effective implementation of ABC/ARV programme will not only result in steady reduction of dog population and the eradication of rabies but will also contribute substantially in reducing man dog conflict and the nuisance caused by the stray dogs.
In order to redress complaints promptly regarding the sick, injured, aggressive/violent stray dogs and dogs effected with or suspected for rabies quick response teams have been constituted and complainant may contact us on No 2520420 & 2520448 as well on JMC website jmcjammu.org. Commissioner, JMC has appealed to the general public to co-operate with JMC and the implementing agency to make this programme successful.
The MOU was signed in presence of Joint Commissioner (Adm), RS Jamwal,  Joint Commissioner (W), Koushal Chand,  representative of NSPCA, Dr Sagar Ghadage and Municipal Veterinary Officer, Dr Jaswant Singh.
