SRINAGAR, Oct 14: J&K Power Employees and Engineers Co-ordination Committee (JKPEECC) today expressed its serious concern over the recent decision of the State Administr-ative Council (SAC) to un-bundle the existing Power Development Department (PDD) in the State and termed this as an anti-employee and anti-people decision.
JKPEECC, a joint platform of Employees and Engineers Unions/Associations of power sector during a press conference here said that the recent decision to un-bundle the existing Power Develo-pment Department and formation of TRADECO and the Govern-ment’s plan to divide it further into five companies and handing over to private companies gradually is a serious move of privatisation which is unacceptable to them.
Mohammad Maqbool, speaking on behalf of JKPEECC said that the decision of the Government will benefit only the private players, particularly the big private companies from outside the State by allowing them to loot the public money and huge hydraulic resources of the State. This will put unbearable miseries on the employees and common masses by snatching away hard earned service rights of employees and workers and huge increase in electricity tariff which cannot been accepted.
“We strongly feel by handing over this vital sector to the private players and big capitalists who are greedy and shows concern only for their profit will be disastrous for the economy, common people and the working class of this industry,” he said.
He further said that the decision of handing over the billing, metering and maintenances in M&RE Wing to the private contractors through separate contracts is a serious move to privatise and outsource the basic work and job which is being performed by the employees of the department normally. Thus rendering thousands of linemen, meter readers and other employees jobless.
The members of the committee while demanding the Governor’s administration to withdraw the decision threatened that if the decision is not withdrawn, they would launch a State-wide struggle to force the Government to change these policies.
