J&K wins record 114 medals in 62nd National School Games

JAMMU, Jan 25: Jammu and Kashmir has won record number of 114 medals in the 62nd National School Games, organised by various States of the Country in 2016-17 season, under the banner of School Games Federation of India (SGFI).
J&K clinched 14 gold, 27 silver and 66 bronze medals, excluding the 7 medals bagged by the State in the discipline of Fencing, the details of which are yet to be known.
The State won highest number of medals in Sqay Martial Art with 4 gold, 11 silver and 17 bronze in different age categories and claimed 12 medals in Gymnastics, with 2 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze in Under-17 and Under-19 Girls categories.
Wushu, Boxing, Judo, Taekwondo, Field Archery, Roller Skating, Kick Boxing and Thang-Ta are the other prominent sports disciplines in which the athletes of Jammu and Kashmir fetched medals, besides the lesser known sports disciplines of Super Seven Cricket, Rope Skipping, Speedball, Hupkwodo, and Jeet Kune Do.
Meanwhile, when contacted and asked about the reasons for brilliant performance of the athletes this season, Director Youth Services and Sports, Sheikh Fayaz Ahmed said that the Department organised various Pre-National coaching camps and tried to involve experts in each discipline, adding that the athletes need to be appreciated for this achievement.
Mr Fayaz said, the Department already organised a mega National Level Football event in Jammu and is all set to host two more National Level events in the second week of February, 2017 in the disciplines of Under-17 Girls Cricket and Under-19 Boys Tennis Cricket.
He further said that organising such mega events apart from providing opportunity to the young sportspersons to hone their skills, help them to interact with their counterparts of other States, besides bringing peace and harmony to the State of Jammu and Kashmir.
