J&K wins 8 medals in 23rd National Sport Climbing C’ship

JAMMU, Jan 2: J&K sport climbers kept the state flag flying high by winning 8 medals including 2 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals in the 23rd National Sport Climbing Championship which concluded at Indore, the other day.
Shivani Charak, an international sport climber of J&K, bagged 3 medals including 2 gold medals in Speed climbing and Bouldering and a Silver in Lead climbing, while in the Junior Girls category, Mrityunjay Sharma, another international climber, also bagged 3 medals including a silver and 2 bronze medals in Speed, Lead c and Bouldering respectively.
In the Junior Boys category, Ritesh Sharma, another talented climber of J&K added 2 medals to state’s kitty by winning 2 bronze medals in Lead and Speed climbing in the Sub Junior Boys category.
The other J&K climbers also excelled in various categories but somehow remained medalless. Ajay Deep Singh, Arun Deep and Asma Gul missed the medals by a whisker. Gul had won 2 gold and 1 silver medals in the Sub Junior Girls category in the North Zone competition earlier.
Shawetica Khajuria and Shashi Kant Sharma accompanied the state team as Manager and Coach respectively.
The state team was sponsored by J&K State Sports Council.
On its return from the National Championship today, the team along with the Secretary and Joint Secretary of Mountaineering Association of J&K Ram Khajuria and Shawetica Khajuria called on the Secretary, J&K State Sports Council Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra. He assured the climbers that the Sports Council will provide the infrastructural and coaching facilities and all other possible help for the promotion of the game.
Mushtaq Ahmad Baba, OSD with the Secretary J&K State Sports Council and Sonam Sidharth, an executive member of Mountaineering Association of J&K were prominent among others present on the occasion.
