J&K transporters suspend ‘Chakka Jam’ stir up to Apr 15

JAMMU, Mar 28: The transporters in J&K who had declared their indefinite strike from March 29 ( Wednesday), have suspended their `Chakka Jam’ strike up to April 15, 2017 on the assurance of Minister of State for Transport (Ind Charge), Sunil Sharma.
Chairman of Transporters Unions, T S Wazir told the Excelsior that on the invitation of Govt today, a meeting was held with the Minister Incharge Transport in presence of Commissioner/ Secretary Transport Hemant Sharma, Transport Commissioner Sheikh Fayaz, Divisional Commissioner Jammu Dr Pawan Kotwal, SSP Jammu Suneel Gupta, SSP Traffic Nisha Nathyal, RTO Jammu Ashwani Khajuria and others. He said MLC Charanjeer Khalsa, KMD Association Chairman Abdul Qayoom and presidents of all the Transport Unions also attended the meeting, which was held under congenial atmosphere.
During marathon meeting, majority of the demands put forth by the transporters with regard to with- drawl of increased fees, taxes, penalty imposed by State and Central Govt, revision of passenger fare, waiver of Passenger Tax, withdrawal of Passenger Welfare Fund and Local Bodies Taxes on National Highway, withdrawal of speed governors etc were agreed and officials claimed that within one week most of the issues will be settled. The Transport Minister appealed the Transporters to call off their strike.
Wazir said on the request of the Government, a final ultimatum was given to the Administration to settle their issues by April 15, 2017. He said it was made clear that if the Government failed to solve their issues within this period, transporters in entire state will not hold any more meeting with the Government and would go for indefinite strike which will carry their agitation to the logical end.
The Minister said that Govt was already aware of their issues and problems. He said Govt will examine their outstanding issues on priority and amicably address the same. He sought support and cooperation from the Transport Unions.
