JAMMU, Mar 25: All types of private transport vehicles will go off the road as All J&K Transport Welfare Association, an apex body of all the Transport Unions, has decided to go on indefinite ‘Chakka Jam’ strike from March 29, 2017.
Declaring this at a joint press  conference here today,  Chairman of the Association TS Wazir, accompanied by presidents  of various Transport Unions said that State Govt has not taken serious note of the issues of the transporters despite meetings in present of Chief Minister, Chief Secretary and some other officials besides several representations.  He said in view of the indifferent attitude of the Govt, the transporters and operators of all types of vehicles including   buses, trucks , tankers,  mini-buses, taxies, Sumos  auto-rikshaws etc have decided to launch indefinite strike from March 29.
Wazir pointed out that transporters have already suffered a lot in the State due to militancy, floods, unrest in Kashmir, border situation  and sharp hike in the prices of petroleum products, taxes / fee  from time to time. He said hike in the insurance  premium has also caused much impact on the transporters.  The Association submitted representations to the Govt on certain occasion but there was no response at all.
He recalled that on January 23, 2017, the transporters had given  72-hour strike call but State Govt called a meeting in Civil Secretariat on January 25 which was convened by the Chief Minister.  On the assurance of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to solve  issues of transporters within days, the strike  was suspended. But till date nothing happened. Three days back also a reminder was given to the Govt and also a memorandum was submitted to the Chief Minister. But Govt has not responded appropriately.  Disappointed with the attitude of the Govt, now transporters have decided to launch indefinite strike in the State from March 29, Wazir said.
