J&K team leaves to participate in 23rd North Zone Sport Climbing C’ship

JAMMU, Oct 5: Thirty two member team of Mountaineering Association of J&K including three officials left today for Delhi to participate in the 23rd North Zone Sport Climbing Championship scheduled to be held at Mira Model School, Janak Puri, New Delhi from tomorrow to October 8.
The well balanced team led by Shivani Charak, an international climber, comprises of 16 boys and 13 girls in six categories of Men, Women, Boys, Girls, Sub Junior Boys and Sub Junior Girls. Whereas only two and three climbers have been selected in the Men’s and Women’s categories respectively, Junior Boys and Junior Girls categories have strength of 5 and 4 climbers respectively. The Sub Junior Boys and Sub Junior Girls, however, include 9 and 6 climbers respectively.
Manik Slathia and Shashi Kant, both senior climbers, are the coach and manager of the team, Shawetica Khajuria, Joint Secretary of Mountaineering Association of J&K will be the overall incharge of the team. The team has been sponsored and screened by J&K State Sports Council.
After the North Zone competition, a 28 member team of IMF North Zone Committee will be selected for participation in the National Climbing Competition to be held at Indore from December 27 to 30.
The J&K team which has lately undergone rigorous training for 21 days under two local coaches, is expected to retain the North Zone Champions’ Trophy which it won last year.
Earlier, the team was given a send off and best wishes by members of the Mountaineering Association of J&K and Tawi Trekkers J&K in the presence of Joint Secretary J&K State Sports Council Shiv Kumar Sharma and Divisional Sports Officer Ravi Singh.
