J&K men, Himachal Pradesh women win opening ties

JAMMU, Apr 28: Jammu and Kashmir men’s team defeated Haryana in a close contest by 8 goals, while Himachal Pradesh girls trounced J&K eves by 6 goals on the opening day of the 21st North Zone Handball Championship, which got underway at Mini Stadium, Parade ground, here today.
BJP State president, Sat Sharma was the chief guest on the occasion, who declared the Championship open amid large gathering.
SM Bali, president J&K Handball Association and former Secretary General Handball Federation of India was also present on the occasion.
The participating teams included Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh and J&K.
In the opening match of men’s section, J&K defeated Haryana by 8 goals (40-32). For Jammu and Kashmir, Neeraj was the star performer, who scored 12 goals, while for Haryana Sonu scored 6 goals.
In the women section match, Himachal Pradesh defeated Jammu and Kashmir by 15 goals to nine (15-9). For Himachal Pradesh, Shalini scored 5 goals, while Poonam from Jammu and Kashmir scored equal number of goals.
