Srinagar, Dec 14: Security forces today arrested an Over Ground Worker (OGW) of Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) militant outfit and recovered huge quantity of explosive material from his possession, which was to be used for making Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
Police said that on a credible input, Police and 55 Rashtriya Rifles of army in Pulwama recovered huge quantity of explosive substances and incriminating materials from Mayour Ahmad Khan son of Mohammad Afzal Khan, resident of Panjran in district Pulwama.
The spokesman said that at a Naka checkpoint established at Tumlahaal Pulwama during which a vehicle bearing chassis No. MALA851CLJMB38072 was intercepted. “Safety fuses, detonators, explosive substances, materials used for making IEDs and other incriminating materials were recovered from the possession of Khan”, Police said.
The recovered items include 1130 gelatin rods of 125 gm each with total weight of 164 kilogrammes. These rods are used in stone quarries for blasting. Besides this, 10 meter safety fuse, 10 detonators, 20 kilogramme improved explosive Super phosphorus and mixtures of urea, phosphorous and DAP was recovered.
Sources said Khan revealed that he was working for the JeM as OGW. He was arrested and a case has been registered in Police Station Litter. Police is investigating the case.
They said that by recovering these explosives major tragedies were averted as the material could have been used for making large numbers of IEDs, leading to havoc.
Sources said that the security forces are investigating about the accomplices of Khan who have provided him the explosives and about the plans of the JeM.
The IEDs are most lethal weapons and sources said that militants are facing setbacks at the hands of security forces this year. So they were planning to make more use of IEDs.
In the meantime, shutdown was observed on second consecutive day in Sopore area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district after two militants were killed in a gunfight yesterday.
Owais Ahmad Bhat alias Abu Bakar of Gund Brath and Tahir Ramzan Dar alias Abu Abdullah of Saidpora were killed in an overnight gunfight with the security forces in Brath Kalan yesterday.
Shops and other business establishments are closed in Sopore town while a skeletal movement of traffic was witnessed on the roads.
Class work remained suspended in all educational institutions in Sopore sub division as per an order issued by the Additional District Magistrate Sopore.
