Jammu’s temp further drops; body of missing jawan recovered

JAMMU/ SRINAGAR, Dec 16: The night temperature of Jammu further dropped  today while dense fog in plain areas of Jammu and Kathua besides other parts of northern region affected air and train traffic, whereas, Army rescue team today recovered dead body  of a missing Army soldier in snow bound Kupwara sector near the Line of Control in North Kashmir.
Official sources told the Excelsior that two flights at Jammu Airport were cancelled while most of the morning flights could not land at Jammu before 12 noon due to dense fog. First three flights were late by two to three hours while Indigo Flight 554 landed Jammu airport at around 2.55 pm instead of 11.15 am. Go Air Flight 205 and Air India Flight 9613 were cancelled.
Sources disclosed that weather at Srinagar Airport was  clear while at Delhi also it was almost fair. The problem of fog was only at Jammu airport during morning hours, they added.
While arrival of trains to Jammu, Udhampur and Katra stations has been delayed from one hour to four hours, the inter-state buses operation was also badly hit due to dense fog in the northern region including parts of Jammu, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Western Uttar Pradesh.
A Northern Railways spokesman said that Kota Express was late by about  three hours, Jammu Mail by about two hours,  Shalimar Express  also by nearly two hours,  Jhelum express by 50 minutes, Uttar Samparak Kranti by one and half hours, Rajdani by an hour, Pooja Express by 1.15 hours, Anvt -Udhampur Spl by an hour, Hemkund Express by one and half hour while Amarnath Express by about 50 minutes from their actual schedule today. The departure of almost all the trains was in time from Jammu, Udhampur  and Katra stations, he added.
A met spokesman said that Jammu’s temperature has further dropped to 5.1 degree Celsius while it was 5.7 degree Celsius on Friday. The day temperature in Jammu was, 17.8 degree C today.
Holy township of Katra recorded a maximum temperature of 18.4 degree Celsius and minimum 6.4 degree C; Bhaderwah  tourist resort of Jammu region a minimum temperature of minus 1.0 degree C and maximum 10.9 degree C; Batote maximum  12.8 degree C and minimum 0.7 degree Celsius, whereas, Banihal recorded minimum temperature of  minus 1.3 degree Celsius.
Meanwhile, the day temperatures across Kashmir showed improvement today but the night temperatures plummeted with Weatherman forecasting dry weather conditions for next few days that will lead to further drop in the night temperature across the region including parts of Jammu.
Srinagar recorded a low of minus 1.1 degree Celsius last night while the day temperature settled at 11.2 Degree Celsius, three degrees more than yesterday’s  8.3 degree Celsius.
Qazigund in South Kashmir settled at minus 2.8 degrees Celsius, while Kokernag town recorded a minimum of minus 3.2 degrees Celsius. The day temperatures of the two places was at 10.0 degree Celsius and 9.6 degree Celsius, respectively.
Pahalgam registered a minimum of minus 3.5 degrees Celsius while the day temperature of the place settled at 7.3 degree Celsius. Gulmarg recorded a minimum of minus 8.4 degrees Celsius while the day temperature of the place was 0.2 degree Celsius.
Kupwara town in north Kashmir had a low of minus 3.7 degrees Celsius while day temperature of the place settled at 10.5 degree Celsius.
And Kargil was the coldest place in the State at minus 11.2 degrees Celsius while the day temperature of the place settled at minus 6.3 degrees Celsius. Leh recorded a low of minus 9.6 degrees Celsius while the day temperature of the place settled at 2.5 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile,  with the improvement in weather, the search operations near the Line of Control (LoC) in North Kashmir, where five soldiers went missing after heavy snowfall on Tuesday, was intensified today.
After four days’ efforts, Army’s rescue team managed to retrieve body of a soldier, Sepoy Kaushal Kumar, who had gone missing along with two others in Gurez sector in north Kashmir early this week.  Three soldiers went missing after a snow avalanche hit Army’s Mani Post  in Gurez on Tuesday.
