J&K eves, Goa boys lift titles; Member Parliament Laway distributes prizes

*AIIB wins 3rd place; Bisma, Jagannath bag special prizes

JAMMU, Mar 30: Defeating Jharkhand comfortably in a one-sided final by a big margin of 67 runs, the Jammu and Kashmir women team lifted the title trophy in the ongoing 24th Federation Cup Tennis Ball Cricket Championship at MA Stadium, here today.
In the men’s section, Goa defeated Jharkhand to claim the trophy, while the 3rd places in both the sections were claimed by All India Industrial Board (AIIB).
Member Parliament Rajya Sabha, Nazir Ahmed Laway was the chief guest on the valedictory function, while Ranjeet Kalra, Member BCCI and vice chairman J&K State Sports Council; Jatinder Sharma, president Tennis Ball Cricket Federation of India and Abdul Qayoom, Chief Sports Officer Sate Sports Council were the guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Laway while appreciating the J&K girls for clinching the trophy, threw light on Prime Minister’s slogan ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padao’.
He said winning and losing is part of the game and playing the game with sportsman spirit is the important aspect.
While inviting the participating contingents to Valley for another mega event in this sports discipline, Mr Laway said that sportspersons are the messengers of peace, adding that their participation in the mega events in Kashmir will be a step forward in bringing peace and harmony in the State.
Mr Kalra and Mr Sharma also spoke on the occasion.
Earlier, in women’s final, J&K defeated Jharkhand by 67 runs. Batting first, J&K scored 88 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in 8 overs. Sumaiya and Shiraza scored 31 runs each.
In reply, Jharkhand bundled out for 21 runs, thus lost the match by 67 runs. Rajni was the top scorer with 7 runs. For J&K, Sumaiya and Nadia took 2 wickets each. Sumaiya was declared player of the match for her brilliant all-round show, while Bisma was adjudged as player of the tournament.
In the hardliner match, AIIB defeated Vidharbha by one run in a thrilling contest to claim the third place.
In the men’s final, Goa defeated Jharkhand by 15 runs.
Batting first, Goa scored a fighting total of 62 runs, while Jharkhand bundled out for 47 runs to lose the match by 15 runs.
The 3rd place was bagged by AIIB, defeating Odisha by 7 wickets. Gagannath Gadekar was adjudged as player of the tournament.
The organising committee includes Farooq Ahmed Salroo, Rajesh Dhar, Bal Krishan Tickoo, Mushtaq Ahmed Turkey, Nazir Ahmed Wani, Manjeet Singh, Sadiq Hussain Malik, Madan Mohan, Suresh Singh and Gurvinder Singh.
Ravinder Sharma (Prop) and Deepak Sharma from Sharma Sports Jalandhar, the Toss Brand owners have sponsored Toss Balls for the Championship.
The proceedings of the valedictory function were conducted by Rajesh Dhar and BK Tickoo.
Meanwhile, in a rare gesture, Ranjeet Kalra, Member BCCI and Member Standing Committee J&K State Sports Council and Avtar Singh, coach of ace Under-19 international cricketer, Rishab Pant were honoured by the organisers of 24th Federation Cup Tennis Ball Cricket Championship during its valedictory function at MA Stadium, here.
While Kalra was honoured for promoting cricket and cricketers in the State, Mr Avtar was felicitated for producing international stuff in Pant from his State.
