It is all about attitude

Gauri Chhabra

When I was a student, I had a singular obsession- that of standing first in the class. I felt if I could outsmart everyone at marks, success lay at my feet. Little did I realize then that marks or a high crystallised intelligence was just a miniscule part of being successful in life.  When it came to success, it is only about having the right kind of attitude. The attitude to accept challenges and, more importantly, the attitude to deal with failure.
You can beat yourself up and succumb to failure or you can just think of coming out of it.
What follows are some strategies that will fine-tune your mind set and develop the right attitude.
Do not quit when you are
hard hit
We all hit moments when we feel helpless. Clichéd as it may sound, we need not quit in rough patches of life. We can either learn from them and move forward or cow down. There are countless successful people who would have never made it if they had succumbed to feelings of helplessness: People with a growth mind set don’t feel helpless because they know that in order to be successful, you need to be willing to fail hard and then bounce right back.
Learn and grow
In the midst of dire circumstances, it is imperative that we learn and grow. Remember, we all are relatively placed in this larger scheme of things. However talented you might ne, there’s always going to be someone who’s more naturally talented than you are, but what you lack in talent, you can make up for in passion. Empowered people’s passion is what drives their unrelenting pursuit of excellence. The thoughts people have of you shouldn’t matter. And if you focus on learning and growing, I guarantee you will be appreciated and seen in a completely different positive light for wanting to continuously develop and grow.
Be enthusiastic
I know, how can you ever feel enthusiastic about work especially when you already feel sluggish with the same work after a few years? It is precisely this reason I ask you to be enthusiastic. To be enthusiastic at work is about a mental state. You need to make the decision to be enthusiastic. Start by saying, ”I will be an eager participant in this project or task.” Attack your task with energy. Do not drag your feet. The more you tell yourself, ”This is so boring,” or whatever the excuse maybe the worse you will feel. Get interested in the work and the energy will come naturally. Then decide to be eagerly involved. Being enthusiastic and energetic are attitudes in the workplace that can get you ahead. You cannot get ahead without energy.
Be positive
Well, if you are positive, you ARE positive. If you believe that you will be successful in a particular task, you are more likely to actually be successful on that task. Why? Because anticipating success has been linked with perseverance, and perseverance is what brings about positive learning outcomes. So whenever you feel you might be slipping back into a fixed mind set, stay positive and make the decision to break free of it.
Embrace diversity
Everyone encounters unanticipated adversity. People with an empowered, growth-oriented mind-set embrace adversity as a means for improvement, as opposed to something that holds them back. When an unexpected situation challenges an empowered person, they flex until they get results. Your approach will help you think openly, positively and creatively. This will help you find solutions to sudden adversities that you encounter. In order to keep your brain flexible, it needs to be challenged. One of the best ways of doing this is to vary the ways you receive and absorb information.
Adaptability is the prerequisite
It is very important to adapt well and quickly in a new team or at a new job. This will help you accept your job and the work better. Adapting to new environments and new projects will be key, but also adapting to changes will be essential for your sustainability.  It will make you dedicated towards the work as you have adapted with the environment. Further, this will be one of your major growth drivers. Even if you’re uncomfortable with adapting, stay aware of what’s changing and be ahead of the curve. There are ways you can keep up with the change without having to go too far out of your comfort zone, but you will only be able to do this if you know what’s happening around you.
Recharge yourself
A dead battery can’t charge a dead battery. Stop complaining about negative work attitudes and lend your own energy to creating a more positive attitude in the workplace. Be the office live wire!
Bringing more energy to work can seem draining. But everyone we’ve talked to who tries it finds that they get more energy in return. Complaining is an obvious sign of a fixed mindset. A growth mindset looks for opportunity in everything, take up challenges as an opportunity to learn. If you don’t fail, you’re less likely to learn. So take risks, look for challenges and try things differently. You’re more likely to discover the real gems that will make you succeed and it will be a hell lot more fun too. So there’s no room for complaints.
Smile
Did you know that simply smiling, even when you don’t feel happy, can automatically put you in a better mood? It may seem “fake” at first, and I don’t recommend being disingenuous, but if you feel negative often at work, try to remember to smile. Smile at a passing co – worker in the hall. Smile as you answer a customer’s question. Smile even while you are by yourself. Yes, this can really help you have a more positive attitude at work! This also can help other people think of you as a positive and friendly person, and when those around you are in a good mood and like being around you, it is easier to get rid of any of your own negative feelings.
Smiling can not only improve your attitude, but if can actually help you be more successful, and believe it or not, some studies suggest that smiling can even help you live longer. If that isn’t a reason to smile, I don’t know what is!
Work toward a new job
If you truly hate your job, why are you still doing it? Most people answer, “money,” but the truth is that no matter what your situation, you can start working toward a job you enjoy more right now. If it’s the company you don’t like, spruce up your resume and start applying for other positions. If it’s the job, start putting in the extra hours so you are noticed for a promotion and raise. Hate the entire industry? Go back to school, even if it is slowly during nights and weekends, to work toward a degree in a field that you enjoy more.
Summing up
By keeping track of how you respond to the little things, you can work every day to keep yourself on the right side of the chart above. The trend is changing, so suit yourself and take a leap towards developing the right attitude!
After all, it is what matters the most…
