Businessman deposits Rs 10 lakh after action

JAMMU, Feb 22: On the directions of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Income Tax Department has launched aggressive recovery drive against the habitual defaulters across the State.
As a part of this drive, the IT Department today issued arrest warrant against a habitual defaulter following which the latter, through his representative, immediately deposited 20% of the demand raised by the department with the assurance to deposit the remaining amount before the end of current financial year.
Official sources told EXCELSIOR that as per the provisions of Income Tax Act, the IT Department issued arrest warrant against a businessman namely Rajan Dutta, who is the owner of Dutta Builders and have strong political connections, for recovery of Rs 68 lakh tax.
“Though the IT sleuths visited the premises of businessman to execute the arrest warrant yet the latter was not available. However, in the afternoon the businessman sent his representative to the Income Tax Department office and deposited Rs 10 lakh”, sources said, adding “the businessmen, through his representative, has also assured the IT Department to deposit the remaining amount before the end of current financial year”.
When contacted, Principal Commissioner of Income Tax J&K Circle R N Sahay confirmed that department has launched aggressive recovery drive in the State. “This is just the beginning, we are going to leave no stone unturned to make recovery from the habitual defaulters”, he added.
In response to a question, he said that under Income Tax Act the Tax Recovery Officer has powers to issue arrest warrant against any habitual defaulter. “In such cases the habitual defaulter is left with no other option but to deposit the tax”, he added.
“We can even go in for attachment of property of the habitual defaulters to ensure recovery of tax”, the Principal Commissioner said.
