ISRO Chairman, DTS Secretary conferred Vijnan Awards

PUNE, Dec 16:
Indian Space Research organization (ISRO) Chairman A S Kiran Kumar has been conferred upon HKF Vijnan Rana Award while Prof Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary in the Department of Science and Technology (DST), has been given Vijnan Bhushan Award by HKF Memorial Foundation.
The awards were presented at an event organized at College of Engineering here on Friday evening.
Speaking after receiving the award, Mr Kiran Kumar said, “I accept this award on behalf of ISRO, which has believed in team work along with building innovative technology.”
Reminiscing about the time when Vikiram Sarabhai, the father of the Indian’s space programme, first laid the foundation of ISRO through the tests at Thumba, to five decades later when India is one of the top five countries in the world in developing space application, Mr Kumar highlighted the agency’s approach in standing out through its ideas and approaches.
Speaking about the immense potential of India, the ISRO Chairman said, “Having sent 104 satellites in a single attempt, India has proved its capacity and its talent. We hope to take up more such missions, which will benefit the country economically also.”
Giving the example of Astrosat, the first space-based astronomical observatory in which India’s premier institutions tied up with ISRO, he said the agency hoped to partner with academia and industries alike.
“We are presently engaging with over 500 industries and institutions. To strengthen our space technologies, we will seek out academia and industries for their expertise, so that we continue to address India’s problems,” he added.
An audio-visual film on Mr Kukar’s life was played at the event. Mr Kumar received the award for his contribution to India’s space science.  (UNI)
