Israel to start Food Processing Center in Northeast next month: Dr Jitendra

NEW DELHI, Feb 21: Government of Israel will start the first-of-its-kind “Food Processing Center” in Northeast, next month.
An Israeli delegation, led by its Ambassador to India, Daniel Carmon called on Union Minister of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh here today and confirmed that first – ever such Center for Northeast will be inaugurated in Mizoram on the 7th of March and it will become functional from the same day.
The project has been set up with tripartite collaboration of the Government of Israel, State Government of Mizoram and Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare, Government of India, while the Ministry of Northeast (DoNER) will perform the role of coordinator and facilitator.
Although located in Mizoram, the Center will cater to the entire North Eastern region. To begin with, this Food Processing Center will concentrate exclusively on the processing of “citrus” fruits and Israel will provide the bulk of expertise knowledge and professional support.
Briefing the media persons after the meeting, Dr Jitendra Singh said, this Center is a beginning of a wider and a larger collaboration between India and Israel. With the passage of time, he said, the various activities of the Food Processing Center will be extended and widened, and from the experience of this experiment, there could be possibilities of contemplating collaboration with Israel for setting up similar more ventures in different States of the North Eastern region.
Dr Jitendra Singh said, the new Food Processing Center will benefit the entire North Eastern region, but in the long run it could also provide resource inputs to farmers from other parts of India.
