JAMMU, Jan 8: Nikhil Mahajan, a physiotherapist from Udhampur district has invented a device namely Force Resistance Physiotherapy Hand Glove (FRPHG), which could become a boon for the profession of physiotherapy in coming years.
“This new device namely is one of the game changer for physiotherapy practising and teaching as it will help to know about the pressure and force that is applied on a patient under a physiotherapy treatment,” said Nikhil, who is presently serving in Sub District Hospital Ramnagar under NCD Scheme. He got patented his unique invention under Intellectual Property India, recently. Nikhil said that the FRPHG can be used for the various Manual Therapy Techniques and then the readings can be used for more accuracy and compliance. It can also be used as an educational tool where a skilled Manual Therapist will teach how much amount of force has to be used while performing on a patient in a normal manual therapy session. Sharing the motivation behind this invention, Nikhil said, “It started with a very interesting story when one day in my class I asked my teacher about how much force he was applying on the patient while teaching us a manual therapy technique. As I was expecting a detailed answer or a numerical answer for my question but in return I was thrown out of the class that day. While sitting in the library, I came up with the idea to develop a gadget which can actually tell us how much force was been applied by a skilled physiotherapist on his patients during sessions”.
He further impressed upon the fact that idea further adds advantage to Physiotherapist in various aspects, like its clinical use where a skilled therapist will use same amount of force each time leading to more accuracy and compliance. “This invention was not easy for me as I was from a medical background and this FRPHG needed an engineer and a programmer but it took me eight years to understand the requirements,” said Nikhil Mahajan, who completed his BPT in 2008-09 from Jammu College of Physiotherapy and MPT in 2012-13 from Maharishi Markandeshwar University, Ambala.
