Intrusion bid foiled in Uri, 3 militants killed

SRINAGAR, Aug 19: At least three militants were killed as Army foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district today while as a soldier was killed in a landmine blast.

Army today noticed movement of a group of infiltrating militants on the LoC in Kasturi Naar in Kala Pahad area of Uri. The group was challenged and they opened fire on the troops, leading to a fierce encounter.
One militant was killed while four others managed to flee back to Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) with two of them critically injured. The search operation was launched in the area and body of one of the militants was recovered along with an AK-47 rifle and ammunition. The troops also saw two bodies of militants lying on the other side of the LoC.
Srinagar based Defence spokesman said an infiltration bid was foiled at Kasturi Naar area in Baramulla. He said so far one militant was killed and operation is going on in the area.
In the meantime, a soldier was killed in a landmine explosion near the LoC in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district last evening.
Army’s 57 RR was on a routine patrol at Gulab Post near Lashdat area adjacent to Z-Gali area along the LoC when the landmine blast took place. A soldier suffered multiple splinter injuries in the blast and was taken to military hospital Drugmulla for treatment where he succumbed. The soldier was identified as Rifleman Dalbir Singh, 27.
Around a dozen youth were detained by security forces during nocturnal raids in Sopore area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
A dozen youth were detained during night raids in Tujjar village of Sopore for their alleged involvement in stone-throwing incidents. However, family members of arrested youth maintained that the youth were innocent and had nothing to do with stone-pelting.
A police officer, however, said that the youth were involved in stone pelting during search operations and were identified through video clips. Clashes had erupted in Tujjar village on Thursday when security forces launched an operation against a group of militants, who were hiding in the village.
And four Over Ground Workers (OGWs) of militants were arrested from Ganderbal and Kupwara districts today.
A police spokesman said that on a specific tip off from reliable sources, Ganderbal police conducted raid in Saloora Patti, Ganderbal area and seized pretty good number of flags of Hizbul Mujahideen and other militant outfits besides daggers, flag materials, stencils, paints, sewing machines and mobile phones containing incriminatory contents from a residential house.
He said two youths Irfan Ahmad Mir and Aushiq Hussain Baba, who are tailors by profession, have been arrested in the wake of unlawful activities. “A case has been registered in this regard in the police station Ganderbal under FIR No 139/2018, U/S 13 ULAP and other relevant Sections of penal code”, the spokesman added.
And two OGWs were arrested in Langate area of Handwara in Kupwara district of North Kashmir today.
A joint operation was launched by Handwara Police and 30 RR of Army in Langate area during which two OGWs of JeM identified as Irshad Ahmad and Feroz Ahmad were arrested. Some ammunition and 3AK magazines were recovered from them.
