Interaction with four theatre directors concludes ‘Meet the Director’ series

JAMMU, Sept 28: Concluding the ‘Meet the Director’ series, organized as part of  Sangeet Natak Akademy, New Delhi and J&K Cultural Academy,  four theatre directors interacted with theatre experts and artistes of the State, at the K L Saigal hall, here today.
Kachoo Ahmad Khan, the first ever theatre director from Kargil to perform a Purgi play in Jammu, said that after graduating from National School of Drama, he decided to come back to Kargil to work for a local group. Regarding his play Sartaqs, that mirrors the suffering of local families divided by border, he said, the hearty response of the people has firmed his resolve to stage based on immediate socio-cultural realities to spread the theatre movement in the region.
Sanjay Kumar Lal, the director of Abhigyan Sahkutlam, said that it was his intention to create a visually rich play where each frame was like a painting.
Speaking on behalf of Zafar Sanchari, the co-director of Praivartan Group, Gwalior, said the group used to stage modern plays but after being impressed by the Nautanki style, it was decided to enact plays like Babuji based on story by Mithelshwar, in the traditional performing style so as to create a bridge between tradition and modernity.
Jyoti Dogra, the solo-actor from Mumbai, whose ancestor had migrated from Jammu to Lahore some 200 years back, and who is visiting Jammu for the first time, speaking about her performance Notes on Chai, said that the experimental play, a collection of bits and pieces everyday conversations, tries to analyze the everyday mannerism which urban people wear and play out like a mask or a social ritual, the acquired structure of social interaction. It is in this playing of games, of lies, expressed physically and vocally, happens the seeping out their innermost desires and fears, the aspects of the psyche, of the collective consciousness.
One who works with eminent theatre personalities like Khalid Tayeb Ji and her guru Yola of Poland, she, drawn to theatre philosophy of Jerzy Growotski, instead of working in a group, has been performing alone since nine years.
