Integrated approach must for securing safe drinking water, sanitation: Sahu

JAMMU, Dec 27: National Development Foundation (NDF) with the support from Communication and Capacity Development Unit (CCDU)/ Water and Sanitation Support Organization, Deptt. of PHE, I&FC, J&K Government organized a one day advocacy workshop for media and allied departments at Conference Hall, PWD Guest House Gandhi Nagar.
District Development Commissioner, Jammu, Ajeet Kumar Sahu was the chief guest and around 120 district/ sectoral officers and media persons participated in the workshop. Rajeev Malhotra, SE Hydraulic presented welcome address and gave a brief on NRDWP.
Rajiv Khajuria Chief Functionary National Development Foundation gave a brief intro of the workshop and sensitized the house on the convergence required under NRDWP and informed that NDF will shortly hold district, block and panchayat level awareness through various mediums to realize the objectives of the NRDWP.
He also stressed on the need for ensuring water quality by way of providing safe drinking water to the rural population. He further added that Village Water and Sanitation Committees have a great role in ensuring water security and providing safe drinking water to the rural populace.
DDC in his address stressed for a proper management of human excreta and stressed on the need of functional toilets constructed under SSA and NBA schemes of Education and Rural Development Deptt. He advocated on fully implementation of WASH component in Govt. schools and said that children can undertake outreach activities by educating their parents and families on good hygiene and sanitation habits which be taught to must teach them in schools.
He said that District Administration will extend full cooperation to NDF and all departments will converge to make this programme a great success so that results are visible in coming times. He stressed upon the need of creating separate toilets for girls in schools keeping in mind their menstrual need also. This will also increase girl’s enrollment in the schools. He also desired that the departments should make drinking water facilities, hand washing and toilet facilities for school children.
Dr. Suresh Chandra Chief Scientist IIIM (CSIR) GoI, Jammu, Dr. Anil Raina, Professor, Deptt. of Environmental Sciences University of Jammu and Siddha ACD Jammu also acted as resource persons and sensitized the group on role of village communities, NBA and low cost solid and liquid waste management.
