SRINAGAR, Nov 13: Army today foiled a major infiltration bid in Keran sector of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district and killed two militants.
Army’s 3 JAK Rifles deployed along the LoC at Bugina Post in Keran sector this morning intercepted a group of at least five militants who were trying to infiltrate into Kashmir. The militants were challenged and they opened fire on the troops leading to an encounter in which two militants were killed and their bodies were recovered.
More troops were rushed to the area and a massive operation has been launched against the remaining members of the group.
Army’s Srinagar based Defence spokesman said that the alert troops deployed along the LoC in Keran intercepted a group of militants triggering an encounter. “During the course of the gunfight, two militants have been killed and the operation is on”, he said.
A senior Army officer said that the militants are desperate to infiltrate into Kashmir ahead of winter during which the LoC experiences heavy snowfall.
Meanwhile, police today arrested a woman along with 20 grenades from Lawaypora area on outskirts of Srinagar city.
A police official said: “Today evening upon receipt of reliable information that some OGWs are coming from Baramulla towards Srinagar with ammunition, a naka was laid opposite Kirmaniabad shrine near Lawaypora.”
A golden colored Chevrolet Tavera car (JK01M-0056) was stopped for checking. Aboard it was a woman. She was searched by lady police personnel present at the naka. A bag in her possession was searched from which 20 grenades along with a large cache of ammunition were recovered.
The vehicle and the bag containing grenades have been seized and the woman detained and taken to women’s Police Station for further questioning.
A case (under FIR no 397/2018 U/S 7/25 IA Act) was registered in Police Station Parimpora and further investigations initiated in this regard.
Sources said that the woman has been identified as Aneesa of Khonmoh in district Pulwama and was acting as courier for last 4 years. They said she boarded the vehicle in Kupwara Bus Stand.
Security forces this evening arrested two persons near Panzgam Railway Station in Awantipora area of Pulwama district.
A police spokesman said that in the evening on receipt of a credible input about movement of militants Army’s 55 RR, Awantipora Police, 185 Battalion of CRPF established a naka at Panzgam Railway under pass. “Two persons were spotted going towards Panzgam who were asked to stop but they started fleeing towards village Dugripora but were chased and apprehended. On their search one UGBL thrower, 2 hand grenades and AK series ammunition have been recovered”, he said.
They have been identified as Nasir Islam son of Shabir Ahmed Shah of Panzgam and Jan Mohammad Sheikh son of Abdul Aziz of Kavinee Dugripora in Pulwama district. “They are believed to be affiliated with LeT outfit. A case under relevant sections of Arms Act has been registered against them in Police Station Awantipora”, he added.
