India joins MTCR

It is not true that India has shown undue haste in joining the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) close on the heels of China blocking her entry in NSG when it met in Seoul recently. India is a country with advanced technology in missile manufacture. MTCR is an organization that is somehow linked to NSG also. India had been working on the question of joining the MTCR for quite some time. The proper time came and she has joined it. Yes, it is a step in the direction of further strengthening her claim for a seat in the NSG. Now India becomes the 35th member of MTCR. Since its civil nuclear deal with the US, India has been trying to get into export control regimes like NSG, MTCR, the Australia Group and the Wassenaar Arrangement that regulate the conventional, nuclear, biological and chemicals weapons and technologies.MTCR membership will now enable India to buy high-end missile technology and also enhance its joint ventures with Russia.
In regard to entry to NSG, Prime Minister Modi has clarified the position of the country. He said that Seoul decision where China had opposed India’s entry was not the closing of the door on India for ever. That was not the position. Many members among the NSG group of 48 were in favour of admitting India as a member. India will continue her efforts and in all probability in another supplementary meeting of NSG being held towards the closing days of this year would see India admitted to the group.
