Srinagar, Nov 14: Newly elected Independent Corporators of Srinagar Municipal Corporation today alleged that Government has ignored them after the elections and funds required to carry developmental works in their wards are not available.
Over a dozen newly elected Corporators today held a protest at the office of Srinagar Municipal Corporation, alleging Government of ignoring them after the elections. The protesting Corporators said the Government has not called them despite taking oath for their offices a month back.

They said because of this indifferent attitude they are clueless about their powers and job. “We are tired of visiting the Commissioner’s office. We are unaware of our powers and role. We have not been called for a single time. Whenever, we visit them they have no idea about our powers and the aim of our election. Moreover, they are neither talking to us nor providing us with any assistance,” Aijaz Ahmad, a Corporator from Badsha Nagar, said.
Taking a jibe at the new Mayor, the Corporator said, “Even the Mayor is busy with himself. He has not called a single sitting. He is supposed to carry 12 sittings in a month but has failed to carry any despite taking the office, 10 days ago. After attaining office the Mayor boasted that he will work with everyone. We are ready to be part of the team but the Mayor is busy in his own work.  He has no time for us,” he said.
He said they are unable to resolve the issue of the people due to non-availability of funds. “People in our Wards are facing different issues. They call us every day. But we are unable to resolve their issues due to lack of funds. Before elections, the Governor and the Central Government announced Rs 40 crore for the municipalities. Where is the money?” he asked.
Sumaira Akhter, a woman Corporator from Dalgate area, complained about the lack of security and accommodation. “We feel threatened without security. No vehicle has been provided to us. We were promised security and accommodation before elections,” she said, adding they are unable to resolve the issues of the people as they could not visit their Wards due to lack of security.
