Pulwama, Jan 24: People today alleged that illegal sand mining goes on unchecked in Jhelum across many villages in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
Residents from Kakapora, Lethpora and Hatiwara villages said that illegal sand digging goes on in Jhelum river and dozens of tippers of sand are dug out from the river threatening the lives of villagers residing near the embankment of Jhelum.
“Each day hundreds of tippers go into the dry areas of Jhelum to load with dug out sand. They not only damage embankments but also dug the bund that was laid post September floods in Kashmir,” said Ali Mohammad, a resident of Kakapora.
He said they approached Irrigation and Flood Control Department but till date no action was taken to stop the illegal mining that puts the lives of hundreds of residents on risk.
